Meet Jamie Dickerson of J.Dixx Photography in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Dickerson.

Jamie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my photography career at the University of San Diego, where I studied under Duncan McCosker, recently featured at the U.S. Embassy in France. He taught me the essential mechanics of developing a beautiful and desirable photograph. I began to work for USD as an event photographer for the College of Arts & Sciences photographing theater, sports, lectures & artists. I was the first student to start this program, in which we took the position originally given to an outside professional photographer and transformed it into an Independent Study. After I finished my course, I began mentoring students to fill the job description. It was a great success.

My business called, J.Dixx Photography, short for Jamie Dickerson Photography, a name I pick up through my travels, is focused on people enjoying life. Events, family portraits, weddings, headshots and homes are my specialties. Thank you for reading about my story. I would love to hear yours and capture your memories.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle as an artist and a creative is getting people to pay you for your services. Even today with new clients, you continually, like any other business, have to prove your capabilities. The bigger the client, the more proving you must do. This is not just in the final product, but the way you interact during the shoot itself. I have seen many creatives not have the ability to make the client and guests or subjects relax to produce the best, creative, unforced images. Your demeanor must be fun yet professional and this can be a constant teeter-totter.

J.Dixx Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I shoot a wide array of weddings, events, conferences, portraits, homes, and product. I am known making any portraiture or event shoot fun and entertaining while capturing crisp, colorful images to meet my clients exact taste!

What sets me apart would be my love of making clients find happiness in having their photo taken rather than anxiety of how they look. I try to find out a little bit about what makes them smile in their everyday life and remind them of this throughout the shoot.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as a “journey not a destination”. I did not learn this quote until later in my career, because I had to! I set many goals for myself as a person and a business owner! Once these goals are met, you expect the feeling of great success. Most of the time, I feel happiness for a short time, but yet always yearning for more! The quote above always repeats in my mind because it tells me that there will be many many hopefully tons of micro-successes along my journey! 🙂
