Meet Janelle Varada of Janelle Varada For Beverly Hills Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Varada.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born to two Hairdressers who were successful salon owners and was influenced by beauty and style from the very first day I opened my eyes. When I decided to follow in the footsteps of my parents, I knew I would have to make them proud,

After beauty school, I began a two-year program at Vidal Sassoon Salon on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Greg Miller, the Manager and Head Master Colorist at the time, took me under his wing and shared all of his and Vidal Sasoons’ Hair coloring methods with me. To be part of that legacy and hair revolution is something I still pinch myself over. It was such an honor to have been trained by such iconic influencers in my industry. I had many color classes with the famous Annie Humphreys, the Mother of Modern Hair color and Iconic Hair Colorist, I learned to apply my creativity using a technical approach to build balanced placement when coloring: Annie taught me a solid base lets you build the greatest foundation.

After Training for two years extensively and passing my test and soiree with Sasson, they decided I had what it took to offer me a position as a fully-fledged hair colorist, working for Vidal Sassoon. This was a position not offered to just anyone. I was extremely excited by the opportunity and my parents could not be more proud of me.

To be accepted into an elite club like this was the greatest honor and privilege. Being part of such an iconic team was amazing. I was a Vidal Sasson-qualified hair colorist working on Rodeo Drive and teaching classes in the Santa Monica Vidal Sasson Academy along with doing hair shows for them. I had arrived! But what came with it was even more amazing. My clients were now the Sassoons themselves, and I was also doing hair for the rich and famous.

My generation of hairdressers was the last generation to have had the privilege of knowing Vidal Sasson on a personal level, talking with him, bouncing creative ideas off of him. He was always interested, always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.

After a five-year history of working for Vidal, I felt it was time to learn even more methods in hair coloring and went on to work for Frederic Fekkai, Beverly Hills. Frederic himself hired me after inviting me to come to work in New York 5th Ave Salon to check out my skills before the hire. In working for him I learned the art of Balayage where Nancy Braun trained me herself. Now I was being headhunted by many Beverly Hills Salons.

I was offered a job at Juan Juan, Beverly Hills and it was too good an opportunity to pass up. I planted some roots and then it was time for bigger and better things, I moved on to another salon before I decided, in May 2017, that it was time to open up my own boutique studio in Beverly Hills, Which. I also opened up a second studio in the Pasadena area. I am thriving beyond my wildest imagination and still am learning in this wildly creative craft. I still love every new challenge and the transformation of my clients’ image.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
