Meet Janet Doré of Scribaceous, Inc. in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Doré.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was on autopilot throughout my 20s and 30s—mindlessly building a safe life that fit the traditional vision of my family.

Just before turning 40, I paused and looked up.

What I saw was a kind husband who provided very well for his family, two gorgeous children, a designer house in the suburbs—and a life that didn’t fit ME. I had nailed my family’s vision, but had never taken the time to get to know myself enough to have my OWN vision.

In my usual style, I made adjustments pretty quickly and began building an authentic life.

After my divorce, I was eager to transition from full-time mom into a career that fed MY soul. Unfortunately, my circumstances and timing were less than ideal—I was over 40 with gaping holes in my resumé and the whole country was in a full-scale recession.

When I would submit applications for open positions, I heard a lot of crickets.

As I continued to get to know myself, I discovered some surprising things—I was far more creative than I had ever realized, I was both a supporter and a leader, and I had a pretty fierce entrepreneurial spirit.

These realizations, coupled with a stubborn desire to maintain my independence and mobility, led me to start my own company—Scribaceous, Inc.

Fast forward six years and I have a thriving business that fits me perfectly. I get to do what I love every single day—from wherever I happen to be—and rarely does it feel like work.

I wasn’t kidding when I said the suburbs weren’t a fit for me. While I was building my company, I began working on a huge dream—becoming an expat and opening a small retreat in Playa Venao, Panama. Vista Cañas Nature & Book Retreat (vistacanas.com) is on track to open in late 2021.

The experiences of the last decade have made me extremely passionate about empowering other women. A couple of weeks ago, my 21-year-old daughter and I launched Tribe XX, a positive, private and safe Facebook group for women to encourage, support, and help each other conquer their fears while forging the path to authenticity and badassery. In one day, 180 women joined…after two weeks, we have 415 members. What does that tell you???

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely not ideal to decide to pursue authenticity after 20 years of marriage and 17 years of full-time momming. My shift created a major fire that my then-husband, two children and myself all had to walk through.

Being self-employed has many perks, but set hours and stability aren’t two of them. My livelihood is at the mercy of my clients’ livelihoods—there are periods of relentlessly long hours and occasional slowdowns that have had me wonder more than once if I was going to make it. (I’m getting better and better at weathering the fluctuations by having faith in my skills and good business karma!)

And, pursuing big dreams—like living and investing an irreplaceable nest egg in another country—is terrifying and has definitely disrupted my sleep over the past couple of years!

What powers me through all of the struggles is knowing firsthand that NOT being authentic, NOT working for myself, and NOT pursuing my dreams creates FAR worse struggles without the happy endings!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Scribaceous, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
I incorporated Scribaceous, Inc. in early 2013. Pronounced “skrî-bāy-shûsh” and meaning “fond of writing,” this unique word captured the essence of me and the work that I do.

In the beginning, I wrote—pretty much anything, including economic reports, demographic descriptions, blog posts and articles, website content, press releases, and more. Over time, as my client base grew, my services organically expanded into social media, email marketing, graphic design, website design, and SEO. The Universe worked exactly as it should and has sent me clients I believe in, primarily in the health and wellness industry.

With little exception, my clients are technologically challenged and budget-conscious solo entrepreneurs. Their relief at finding a “one-stop-shop” run by a knowledgable and helpful person they can reach at will is palpable.

Earlier this year, when I saw the huge gap between the amateur DIY websites and the pricey designer ones, I created a product that has become my specialty—professional and expandable one-page websites created by a designer who will help your business grow every step of the way. Hence, One Page Website Pro (onepagewebsite.pro) was born.

I credit my success to my ability to connect with people, a strong intuition, (at times saintly) patience, and a tendency toward perfectionism in both service and craft. If I can’t serve a need for my client, I will connect them with someone who can. Fortunately, this rarely happens!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
To be honest, I don’t feel that luck (good or bad) has had a significant influence on my life—but, karma most definitely has. My personal and professional philosophy is to give without expectation and build other people up. The result is a whole lotta good karma!
