Meet Jarod Farver of Farv’s Pickles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarod Farver.

Farv’s Pickles is an all-natural, artisan, pickle-company that was founded by Jarod Farver in 2013. These unique pickles combine an old family recipe from Jarod’s grandmother in Hampton, Nebraska, with a California twist. In 2013, Farver began experimenting with his grandmother’s recipe, utilizing new and creative ingredients to tweak and perfect the pickle. It was important to preserve grandmother’s classic dill recipe while perfecting his own take on the newly re-invented Midwestern pickle. Local beer and bourbon are just a few creative ingredients in our product profile.

After perfecting the recipe, Farver became a certified canner in May 2014 in the state of California through UC Davis, and with that, Farv’s Pickles was successfully created. Farver utilized the help of restaurant friends for kitchen space and started selling to local markets and boutique storefronts in San Diego. The response was huge and after just 6 months, Farv’s Pickles was selling in 15+ stores around San Diego County.

Today, Farv’s Pickles has 5 main products, along with several seasonal items, and is currently selling in over 30 stores from San Diego to Los Angeles County, including Gelson’s, Jimbo’s Natural Food Store, & Williams Sonoma.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting this pickle company in 2013 we had to find investors to even make this possible. We raised about $25,000 to start and haven’t needed to raise anymore since. FDA regulations for canning are very difficult in California. Time, batch numbers, quantities, and acidity levels have to be documented for every batch of pickled being made. -long process I had to take a college class to become a certified pickle maker in the state of California.

In late 2016 we reached out to a canning/pickling factory in LA for help with production. In order for us to grow, we needed someone to make our products for us. We then picked up more locations and start growing. Mid-2017 we got an email stating they no longer could pack our product- leading us to find a new co-packer. This process to about 6 months and almost drove our business to fail.- Stores were out of product for half the year with no income for us. We finally found a company in Pasco Washington to help us in September 2017.

Getting product in new stores requires the buyer to agree and love your product. This isn’t too hard if you can get them on the phone or away from their busy jobs. Being creative is key to get an email or phone call answered.

It’s one of the toughest businesses to be in…
