Meet Jasmyne Norris of Ja’Nor Blu & District 619 in La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmyne Norris.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmyne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started being interested in the art of makeup in high school. My mother took me to mac and just let me pick product out. I would dibble and dabble with the makeup from high school on through college. While attending Tennessee State University, I started to become all the more interested in fashion and makeup as a whole. I grappled back and forth with the idea of doing makeup or taking another route in life.

In 2017, I was in a very low place emotionally & spiritually and I just needed to get out. My best friend is someone that pushed me to start pursuing makeup again. One day she happened to be volunteering for a high school majorette dance team, and she needed my help with the creative direction as a whole. It was that experience that stirred up my love and passion for makeup a form of art, a craft. Working for the team from 2017- 2020 is full of learning moments, mentoring and bonding. I am very grateful for the practice that allowed me the experience I needed to get to where I am now as a makeup artist.

I recently made the decision to move back home to San Diego after ten years of living in Nashville. During the epidemic, I’ve gotten the chance to become a full-time makeup artist. I also own a company called District 619 which is a cosmetic line that sells various products such as lashes and lip products. We also create face masks and offer a service to help other entrepreneurs build their business from the ground up. The service also includes steps to create business cards and a website. I am preparing as well to come out with a fashion line very soon which will be an extension of the District 619 brand as a whole. District 619 also.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road on this journey of personal growth along with the growth that comes with being a young entrepreneur. Once I figured out how to budget and invest my money, things became easier. Being an entrepreneur is being someone that has the ability to make money every day. In the make-up industry, it is very not to struggle with comparison. I live by three major keys through this journey: study, practice, execute. Learning from other artists is the best choice I’ve ever made. This helped me understand make-up with different techniques from a diverse group of make-up artists. Moving from Tennessee back to California building clientele was definitely a struggle, but I used all of my resources and my clientele came along when all in the right timing. I allow patience to do its work with my business and as the journey progresses, I’m continuing to learn new things every day.

Please tell us about Ja’Nor Blu & District 619.
Ja’Nor blu is a traveling make up service. I travel to clients and provide the look of their choice. I also provide group or one on one make up classes. I offer to make service for various occasions. Bridal showers, birthdays, baby showers you name it. My favorite of all I would say is to be a part of a bride’s special day, it’s an honor to be a part of making another woman’s dream come true. I specialize in dramatic glam & soft glam looks.

What I am most proud of as a company is the experience my company provides. I would say what sets me apart is my personality and warm welcoming energy. I love what I do! The love comes at that moment when a client views the final product of my work. The excitement the client has just moved my heart and reminds me that its moments like that that remind me of my why. My goal at every appointment is to provide my clients with not only simply what they paid for, but that and more. Building relationships & teaching my clients is why I have this talent. I aspire to show gratitude in everything I have built and I have an expectant perspective in hopes of what is to come. I just want to grow and continue to be able to support other black-owned businesses along my path. I am here to not only inspire but sow into other’s passions and dreams however way I can.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I honestly am very thankful to be home. Other than the weather being a bit changed and the cost of living, I love it. There is nothing like San Diego to me.
