Meet Jay Pesayco of Photobooph in Paradise Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Pesayco.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my photo booth business in 2014 with the intentions to make some extra money on the side. That year only had 3 clients booked and did not even cover any costs that I have spent for all my equipment. In 2015, after a failed year from the year before, I bought another photo booth with a more updated style and started to take my small business more seriously. We ended the year with 25 events booked. 2016 picked up for us, doubled our events from last year, ended up buying another photo booth to compensate for all the events we were getting. This year we are closing up on 100 events and we were voted Best Photo Booth of 2017 by City Voter’s San Diego A-List.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly when we first started, I thought all I had to do was buy a camera, printer and we were all set. Little did I know I would have to learn basic photography. I did not know anything about aperture, iso, shutter speed. I did not know anything about business. I did not know what a fictitious business name was or how to register. I did not know about contracts, liability insurance or model releases. It was overwhelming at first, but we learned something new with each client/event and still to this day continue to learn and try and better ourselves each event.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Photobooph is a photo booth rental in San Diego and surrounding cities. We offer unlimited photos, truly unlimited prints and we personally customize the prints to fit your wedding, birthday or any of your special occasions.

I also work for Southwest Airlines. Southwest is known for its fun-loving attitude and great customer service. What I have learned from working at Southwest, I instill it into my small business. Photobooph mimics the Southwest culture. We love to have fun, we want you to have fun, and our goal is to capture all of that in a picture for you to bring home.

What were you like growing up?
I was raised in the southeastern part of San Diego in the Paradise Hills area. Southeast San Diego is a very diverse community and is often stigmatized and struggle with the image as a bad neighborhood filled with violence, gang activity, and drug trafficking. Growing up, I was surrounded by it and I even it see it today. Over the years it has improved, but now involving myself to bring out a positive light for our community. Not a lot of people realize that there are very successful people that come from Paradise Hills. I am now part of a committee to help showcase these individuals with roots from Paradise Hills. Made in Paradise Hills Night Market will be on November 25, 2017 at Penn Athletic Field from 4pm-10pm!
