Meet Jeff Kassebaum of Jeff Kassebaum Photography in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Kassebaum.

Jeff, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My wife was the photographer in the family until our first Son was born. That Christmas she gave me a 35 mm camera but she also registered me into a local photography class offered at a camera shop. I have always attributed my success in photography not from the camera but taking that class.

In 1983, I opened one of the first One Hour Film processing plants in the country in Oceanside. We were quite successful in this new cutting edge technology that everyone used. I saw a need and an opportunity to learn photography and to add that to our list of products we could market to our customers. I went to school at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara and also attended school at USD and came out with an Arts and business degree and became a Certified Professional Photographer I specialized in family portraits either on the beach or at the park or even at their home. I have been able to photograph a families children’s 1st communion, then their 8th grade promotion, their senior photos, their wedding, and even their children. I become the family photography and I cherish that!

My motto is the Family Portraits are not expensive…they’re Priceless!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Opening up a new business like the one hour film processing plant had many hurdles to overcome. One being that you could not just hire someone to work in the business that knew it. Lots and lots of training for myself and employees. The first year was tough as people were unsure of the quality of getting their film processed so quickly. After a while people understood that we were offering better quality than they could get elsewhere.

The photography has morphed from film to digital which had its learning curve as well. I embraced the new digital format and learned early on that the advantages of digital had to offer to my clients, like changing heads in a photo or adding a background sky etc.

Jeff Kassebaum Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have owned and operated Jeff Kassebaum Photography for 33 years. I’m known as “The Beach Photographer”. I specialize in family beach portraits. I’m unique as I do not charge by the time it takes to do the session but by the session itself. I won’t leave until I get all the images that I could possibly do and that just might take more time but that’s how I like and need to work and my clients appreciate that!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by my great family. I have a great wife of 42 years of marriage. I have two Son’s serving in the Air Force as Lt. Col.’s. And Three beautiful granddaughters, I’m blessed!

Money is important but it does not define me. Having a loving and caring family is really the true marker of success.

  • I do family beach/park portrait session for $150.00. I offer Digital files as well as portraits
