Meet Jenna Khoury of The Brush Stop Pediatric Dentistry in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Khoury.

Jenna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a child, I suffered from a dental disease. My teeth were decayed and abscessed, and along with the pain came the humiliation of a broken down, unattractive smile. Some of my earliest memories include me covering my mouth when I spoke. And as a child, my visits to the dentist were riddled with fear and anxiety over the discomfort of the procedures, as well as the impending doom of learning I had more cavities. It was a lose-lose situation.

So by Junior High, I was determined to change my path, and use my experience to change the way children perceive and experience their dental health. After completing my Bachelors at UC Davis in Northern California, I went on to complete my Dental Degree as well as my specialty in Pediatrics in Boston, from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

After becoming a Diplomate of The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, I sought a different approach to my profession in the Holistic Medicine route. I spent many years practicing alongside several talented Dentists who incorporate more of a “whole-body” approach to Dentistry, and this experience has assisted in the cultivation of my own progressive pediatric dental practice, The Brush Stop.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! Owning and operating a business is no easy feat. I was forced to face one of the most difficult situations in my personal and professional life about one year ago when I was in a motor accident as a pedestrian.

My practice was just over 2 years young, and I also happened to be six months pregnant at the time. I was struck by a car, leaving me with several broken bones, and the near loss of our unborn son. However, needless to say, we are alive and recovering, and I am so fortunate to work with such an amazing team of individuals and an equally talented pediatric specialist, Dr. Katheria, who all stepped up to the plate, and provided immaculate care to our patients in my absence. Our community banded together to support us all, and the outpouring of love and encouragement from our dental families was more than we ever expected.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

The Brush Stop Pediatric Dentistry is a progressive pediatric dental practice that combines excellence in total “whole-body” health and comprehensive dental care, in a fun, enthusiastic environment, in order to meet the unique needs of our pediatric population. We do this utilizing only the safest and most biocompatible materials on the market, as well as incorporating a child’s diet, lifestyle, and overall health as the heart of our treatment approaches.

While we specialize in the treatment of children of all ages, my personal passion is the diagnosis of tongue-ties in newborns to adolescents and the use of CO2 Laser technology in the treatment of the condition. As a member of the San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition and International Affiliation of Tongue Tie Professionals, and having had a tongue-tie myself, I have experienced first hand the developmental discrepancies, and lifelong ramifications of an undiagnosed tongue tie that can create cranio-facial disharmony, and poor airway development.

What were you like growing up?
I was raised in San Diego, and graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School, where I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities including student government, dance team, and peer counseling. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a Dentist, and was laser-focused on the course. As a child, I always had a thirst for knowledge. I often joke that I would be a professional student if it were an option. I love to learn! However, if I had to choose, my back up profession would have been to become a hip-hop dancer, ha.
