Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Faye.
Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My company is SFI Foundation and we are a non-profit organization that administers a testing certification program for racing safety products. I currently hold the position of Vice President. I grew up in the company because my parents ran it, and I helped out around the office as a kid. Once I graduated with a BBA from the University of San Diego, I started working at SFI full time. I started out in the trenches doing general office work like answering the phones, filing, copying, and things like that. Over the years I worked my way up, holding different positions and learning the business along the way. Today as Vice President, I essentially run the company, under the guidance of our President and Board of Directors.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with any company, you’re going to have your good times and bad times. Since we work in the business of motorsports safety, there can be lives at stake. It can be very difficult when you witness serious crashes that have caused injury or death. But you have to learn from those experiences to improve safety as much as possible. When you think about the lives that can be saved from gaining experience from those difficult times, it can be worth it.
Please tell us about SFI Foundation.
Our company oversees a testing certification program for racing safety products. Manufacturers that produce things like driver suits, seat belts, helmets, seats, impact padding, etc., must test their products to our minimum standards to show that they comply with the performance criteria set for each individual product. The test standards are developed by engineers and other experts that use science to develop the appropriate thresholds for testing. We have our own test lab here in Poway where we test many of the items, and sometimes we utilize outside labs for other types of testing we’re not equipped for here, like crash testing on a sled. I’m most proud of the fact that our program has raised the performance standards that manufacturers have to meet when they sell a safety product to racers. Our program gives racers the confidence that the equipment they buy off the shelves will give them the protection they need in a racing impact or fire. We are the only company in the United States that provides this service to the racing industry for such a wide range of products.
