Meet Jennifer Verruto of Blythe Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Verruto.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started Blythe Interiors seven years ago as a one-woman show from my home office. I was working at a model home design firm by day and was taking on little side projects for friends and family on nights and weekends. When this grew by word of mouth to be more than I could handle as a side gig, I took the leap of faith and started working full time on my own. After a few years of being on my own, I realized I was super busy and could use an assistant. I started bringing on a new person to the team every time I got too busy, and now I have eight employees … and we’re still growing!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I like to think of struggles and mistakes as lessons – every struggle is a lesson gratefully learned that has shaped and molded my business into what it is today. One of the biggest lessons for a creative is that you start out in the world doing what you love, then wake up one day realizing you’re a business owner, making big decisions and trying to nail down an office space, create a website, or learn how to read a profit & loss statement. Finding the right balance of being in a creative flow for my clients and their projects, while making the tough decisions a business owner needs to make has been a challenge that I have found is a common thread among many.

Blythe Interiors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am so incredibly proud to have found a unique niche in the interior design industry – my team and I like to take a realistic approach to design. We realize not everyone has a million-dollar budget. Most homeowners just want to make their space as nice as possible that they can afford – and there are great options out there at our fingertips that can make this happen – but people just don’t know what to do!

We love to shop at affordable retail stores and work with each client’s own style to create a space that they feel is home. Some designers are sought after for their own personal style – which is AWESOME! But we like to work collaboratively with our clients to find the style that is right for them and bring that to life in an affordable way.

Sometimes that means offering advice through a couple of hours of consultation, and sometimes that means working with a client over a year’s time to make the right decisions about what walls to knock out, or which flooring options work best. We take real pride in helping our clients make sound decisions and end up with gorgeous results that don’t break the bank.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Keeping it real and having a true connection with each of our clients! I always want our clients to have fun with us throughout the design process – they get to know their designer on a personal level and collaboratively create a space that they can’t wait to come home to.

We will educate them on why something works or doesn’t, and I think our clients appreciate that we tell them the truth and don’t let them make bad decisions, even if the truth hurts. We find gentle ways to say that the 4-time hand-me-down sofa may have worn out its welcome, or to tweak a room’s layout!
