Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Antonio.
Every creative has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am 27 years old and the Founder of Hoopery Inc., also known as The Hoopery. I am a Respiratory Therapist at a local hospital, a husband to my wife Tiffany and a new father to our 6-month-old son, Isaiah Bryant (yes, after the great Kobe Bryant). In 2008, when the market crashed, it really took a toll on my parents financially. Watching your parents struggle after working so hard to provide for the family was difficult because I felt helpless. Those close to me know how family oriented I am, and what these difficult times taught me was to be thankful for the little things in life like family, a roof over our head, and food to eat. My dad always made sure we kept good faith in God and reassured us there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.
At 16, my brother provided me with resources and tools where I learned a lot about personal development, understanding your self-worth, being your own boss, doing something you love and are passionate about, and finding my “why.” I did not know it at that time but these valuable tools I took with me, ultimately built the foundation of the entrepreneur mindset that is instilled in me today. Throughout the years, I have seen my siblings take the traditional “go to school, get a degree, get a job” route, but had such a rough time because either opportunities were slim, or you needed experience. I felt like I was wasting time, so I knew I had to do something, fast. In 2015, I started a Respiratory Therapy program, and at the same time created the Instagram account @thehoopery. My one passion in life is basketball; as a person engulfed in the culture of basketball as a player and a fan, I saw an opportunity in the social media realm where I can turn my passion into something that can bring like-minded people within the basketball culture together. As my Instagram following started to grow, I decided that the account needed a logo. After the logo, I thought, “Well, what if I put this logo on some shirts? My dad asked if I was serious about this and offered to give me $500 to order my first batch of Hoopery Shirts. I took him up on his offer and sold them out of the back of my trunk at LA Fitness. The rest was history.
Please tell us about your work and brand.
The Hoopery is a brand dedicated to the fashion, lifestyle, and culture of basketball and its fans. Our vision is to make a massive impact and contribution to the allure and legacy that the sport has created for players, spectators and all in between. Through our nostalgic and unique creations, we remind our followers of their strong connection and love for the game. From playing the sport and understanding the true fundamentals, the game teaches us lessons on what it takes to win, succeed, and go after something you love. Lessons like leadership, communication, teamwork, attention to detail, perseverance and passion are all what you need to be successful on and off the court. That is what I love about the Hoopery. The Hoopery is that our message is universal, and the sport really knows no boundaries.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing creative professionals today?
Although I am nowhere near where I would like to be, I am happy with how far we’ve come as a brand and feel like it’s only the beginning for us. I don’t have the blueprint to success, and I think I can speak for other entrepreneurs out there when I say that that the biggest challenge in business is not giving up. There are many times it can get rough and stressful. When you put your heart into something you are so passionate about, put it out there and not get the same response you expected, it can be discouraging. What keeps me going is I remind myself of why I do what I do, and that is create a life for my entire family where money does not dictate how we live our life, and there is nothing that will get in the way of me achieving that. It’s those who keep at it and weather the storm that make it to the top, and it’s a different journey for everyone. I thank you guys for getting a little insight on mine and if I can inspire at least one person to go after their dreams, then I know I’m doing something right.
