Meet Jerry Nutter of Hang 10 Shaved Ice in Coronado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Nutter.

Jerry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the owner of Hang 10 Shaved Ice enrolled in the Coronado Young Entrepreneur Academy in 2014. The class went on for 25 weeks and at the end of the class the students had an investment panel. Hang 10 Shaved Ice won the best business and was funded $3,500 by the Coronado Chamber of Commerce. Hang 10 struggled for a location in Coronado but when the good folks at High Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen met with Hang 10 it was a perfect match. Hang 10 opened June 16th, 2015 at High Tide Bottle Shop while I was 18 years old. Today we operate in conjunction with High Tide Bottle Shop as well as do events such as the Coronado Public Safety Open House.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding a location, we tried a different location for a little bit and failed there.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hang 10 Shaved Ice – what should we know?
Hang 10 Shaved Ice was started while I was in high school. I believe we are the highest quality shaved ice in San Diego. We use authentic Hawaiian flavors as well as use sharp blades for the finest shaved ice possible.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
JT Rogan – Mentor in the startup process. JT owned a shaved ice business when he was in high school and has had a few businesses since. He was a pivotal part in finding a location.

Matt Pontes- Was the instructor of the Young Entrepreneur Academy. Was there every week instructing us. If he didn’t know something, he would bring somebody in who did.

Tom Latona- Owner of High Tide, was absolutely instrumental in our operation. Without Tom’s flexibility, we would not have a location in which we sell our shaved ice.
