Meet Jessica Fichtner and Joanna Conrad of The Manchette Studio in Mission Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Fichtner and Joanna Conrad.

Jessica and Joanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After trying for years to be happy in a job working for others, we both realized that it just wasn’t a fit. We wanted more from our jobs than a paycheck, we wanted to wake up every day knowing that we were doing something we loved. Sometimes the best job is not something you can search for, it is something you have to create for yourself. It was in a time of frustration that the idea to do it on our own came about. That is when the Manchette Studio was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Knowing we wanted to start our own business was only the first step. We then needed to find a niche in Interior Design that we fit in. We knew hospitality design was the field we would thrive in. The challenge was convincing clients that two women could handle the job that is usually done by a much larger firm.

The Manchette Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What do you do:
Simply put, we design hotels. Our clients engage us to create an environment that inspires guests to stay at their hotels. Because we are a small firm, we have our hands in every step of the project. Our small firm makes us always available to our clients, including them in every step of the design process.

What are you most proud of:
Overcoming the challenges such as self-doubt, criticism, fear of the unknown. Persevering to build a business that we as women can be proud of for ourselves and for our children.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment is landing the most current project we are working on, Carté Hotel in Little Italy. Having such a visible project in our own backyard has been extremely gratifying. Seeing one of our projects become a permanent part of San Diego’s downtown landscape is very exciting for us.
