Meet Jessica Flores of Aerial Revolution Entertainment in Linda Vista and Miramar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Flores.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Aerial Revolution really started in 2006 when I was just beginning to perform more often as a freelance aerialist. I was performing with a good friend named Angel Vera at the time. We usually drove far north in order to practice, since there was nothing in San Diego for aerial or circus training. I had been coaching gymnastics for most of my life, and one of the gyms that I taught approached me to teach aerial classes to some of the kids. In exchange, we were allowed to hang our equipment for practice. We quickly outgrew our classes at the gym and had to look for a larger space to teach. Around this time, my partner, Angel, left for New York and later passed away during a performance when he fell from his apparatus. We were all devastated and I was not sure I could continue to pursue aerial arts as a career. By then, we had a pretty strong community and had a few trained teachers and there was a big demand for classes. After some deliberation, I decided to rent the floor at another gymnastics gym to keep our program alive. Again, we filled our classes and I felt pressed for more space.

Finally, I decided to look for my own dedicated studio space and took the plunge. We opened our studio on Napa St. in October of 2010. At first, we offered a full program of aerial classes, yoga, and dance. Our classes were very popular from the first day of operation! We had a cool and trendy vibe; a very welcoming and creative atmosphere. We had shows every few months, performed at parties and special events, and began to really develop our progressions in the most popular aerial disciplines: aerial silks, Lyra, and trapeze. We added teacher training, new classes, new teachers and new equipment. Our shows and recitals became a huge part of our program because they offered a stepping stone toward a professional career in circus. Many of our students have gone on to perform with Sea World, Disney, Cirque du Soleil, and other professional entertainment companies throughout the years! Aerial arts and circus fitness have grown in popularity over the past 10 years. We now boast over 100 classes per week at our Linda Vista (original) location and we recently began a second program up in Miramar inside of Flip Force Gymnastics.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Although this business grew organically, it hasn’t always been an easy road. Since there were no other businesses like ours to model after, we really had a “learn as we go” attitude. There were many trials and errors. There didn’t seem to be a true pattern to the ups and downs either! Also, I had no education in business. I had many years as a program director (gymnastics) and a team coach, but never really had to deal with budgets, marketing, etc. I made a lot of mistakes, and sometimes, looking back, I realize that we took the long way to get where we are now.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aerial Revolution Entertainment story. Tell us more about the business.
Our business began as an events entertainment company that specialized in aerial arts and cirque style performances. We are also a training facility for aerial arts and cirque style fitness classes. We are best known for our classes in Aerial Silks, Aerial Yoga, Trapeze, and Lyra, but we offer several styles of aerial arts and acrobatics classes. I am the proudest of our philosophy and the community we have built. We like to think of ourselves as a family. All people from all walks of life are welcome to try our classes because we make it accessible to anyone. We want our students to have a positive and adventurous experience in our classes. It feels more like art than exercise. Aerial Arts conditions your body like a gymnast. What really sets us apart besides our philosophy is our teaching experience and our progression system. We have spent so many years teaching and developing our system and it just works. Our students can take classes in their favorite disciplines and actually improve. We teach technique as well as new skills in almost every class. When the student is ready, they are invited to perform in our shows. We treat each person with respect and we have the student’s best interest and goals in mind because it’s about them not us. We are proud that many of our students become professional performers, but we are equally as proud of the student who learned to invert for the first time. We love to see the progress of our student’s strength and flexibility, but also as they learn life skills, meet their best friends (and significant others), and become confident human beings.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, I will say that we have had some bad luck. Timing has been off many times in my goal of finding a new space. We have had floods, a fire, and lots of building issues. But I believe that many people became successful by facing obstacles with a positive attitude. Of course, I wish for good luck, but I am taking 100% responsibility for my life and for the future of my business. I believe that we create everything that happens to us and that it is entirely possible to overcome our own limits.
