Meet Jessica Gouthro of Live Lean TV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gouthro.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I became interested in fitness at a pretty young age, but it wasn’t until after college and a few years into “adult life” that I realized fitness was my passion and an area where people need help and guidance. After experiencing my own transformation and the empowerment that comes along with getting strong and lean, I knew there was an opportunity to share that with others.

I started out as a personal trainer, helping clients one-on-one in the gym, and did so for many years, over a decade. But I always felt unfulfilled, as if I was staying in this tiny bubble of my neighborhood and neglecting hundreds of thousands of others all over the world. I knew I could do more, reach further and make more impact, by going online.

In 2009 I started recording fitness videos and uploading them to YouTube, but I had no idea how to make a business out of it. Then in late 2012, when I stumbled upon Brad Gouthro (my now husband) and owner of Live Lean TV, I was incredibly inspired and in awe of the way he was running his YouTube channel and business. I binge watched his videos, then took a leap and wrote him an email.

Shortly after, we met up in Santa Monica to collaborate on a YouTube video and the rest was history. Our connection was so strong we immediately started daily FaceTime chats, dated long distance (Canada/US) for almost 2 years, then got married.

For the past 5 years we’ve been running the business together and it’s been a dream come true. Although hard work, this job has been ultimately more fulfilling and rewarding than anything I’ve ever done.

I’m proud of how many people, all over this planet, whose fitness and lives we’ve helped transform and in awe of the power of online connection.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
LOL Nooooo. Not a smooth road at all. It’s definitely been a bumpy ride! Lots of struggles, unexpected circumstances, pleasant surprises and difficulties along the way. We still struggle with aspects of our business, and to be honest, I don’t really expect it to ever be that smooth. With growth, comes more challenges, different types of challenges. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Keeps life interesting!

Some of the main struggles, especially in the beginning, were with my belief and faith that everything would work out. There were many occasions where I doubted myself and went back to side-jobs to make ends meet, simply because I didn’t yet understand how to generate income and my bills were too high. I felt I had no choice but to go back to my old ways of making money, until I could figure it out (with no idea of when or how that would be). I kept yo-yo-ing between my old jobs and this new dream and that continued on for years while working on the online business. Even to this day, I still have a few side-hustles. It’s hard to let go of the “safety net” of being a check-receiving employee.

Another struggle with becoming an entrepreneur is learning how to manage your own time efficiently. When there are no set hours, you tend to work only when convenient for you, versus when you “have to”. I’ve learned to harness the power of deadlines, by setting them for myself, writing them down, stating them publicly to create a sense of accountability, and then hustling to meet them. Even more challenging now that we have a toddler running around, but seriously, deadlines are everything. When the pressure is there, you’ll make the time instead of find it.

Please tell us about Live Lean TV.
Live Lean TV is an online fitness media brand. We create and sell online workout and nutrition programs to help people get and maintain a lean body 365 (all year around).

We specialize in teaching people about sustainable fitness and nutrition (meaning you’ll learn how to get healthy and lean at the same time, not sacrificing your health for short term results)

We are known for challenging and effective workouts, healthy “real food” meals, and transforming bodies.

As a company we’re most proud of our transparency, integrity, and closeness with our followers. We love when people tell us they like how real we are and that we are a normal family, living a more fit than average life.

The thing that sets us apart from other fitness brands is our holistic and long-term view of getting lean. For us it’s always been about sustaining it – not just achieving it once. Which means you have to be healthy, optimize your hormones, and maintain a good relationship with both food and fitness. We lead by example, by following workouts and recipes along with our Team members in our membership site Our members do the same workouts and eat the same meals that we do so we’re all in it together.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Awe man, if I got to have the chance…the thing I would have changed would be my consistency and focus.

I wish I would have started a YouTube channel back when YouTube was born! and I wish I would have known then how important it is to be focused and consistent. Becoming the best at ONE thing, instead of all over the place, switching genres and confusing people.

I was very confused in the beginning and instead of sticking to my passion, I kept chasing shiny objects and trying new things.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to have a clear vision, keep things simple, and always work with this one thing in mind: HELP PEOPLE.

I have been a LL follower for approaching 1-year soon! If only I discovered them sooner!! The workout programs are very challenging. Some of their workouts even have suggested weights for dumbbell and barbells so you can choose to take that challenge. Sometimes we get too comfortable with what we’re used to and end up doing life in a box. With LL programs (nutrition meals) it is as if they’re combining their personal zeal with ordinary life, which makes fitness and my food journey even that much more exciting!! Thank you to Brad, Jessica, (must also mention baby Kayla, and of course Bruno) – for being down-to-earth, simple, and a helping/giving family and for living a great example for us all to follow!!
