Meet Jessica Rice of Jessica Rice Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rice.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2009, I was living in a small country in West Africa, working with a great organization called Compassion International. I spent my days running around in the dirt, dancing with women in the villages way past dark and sharing stories of beautiful children through photos.

While I was there I started getting emails requesting me to shoot weddings when I returned to the states. I was a bit hesitant to say’yes’ but once I did I fell in love. I realized very quickly that my passion was to share stories and capture timeless images whether that was children living in poverty, parents welcoming a new baby home or a couple committing their lives to each other.

My husband (a San Diego native) and I moved out here 3 years ago after meeting and getting married in Atlanta. Moving to San Diego was basically starting my business all over again, I couldn’t take my Southern clients or sweet tea with me hahaha! When we first landed here I started a job at Cisco which actually birthed my photography subscription service.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Moving a business across the country has definitely not been “easy” but the challenge has been worth it.

Please tell us about Jessica Rice Photography.
I’m actually just one half (the more fun and talkative half) of our husband and wife photography team here in San Diego. We specialize in modern luxury weddings for the fun and chic jet-setting bride. We deeply value all of the intimate moments and thoughtful details. We strive to make sure all of our clients walk away saying that they just had the most fun photoshoot of their lives, that they felt like their genuine selves.

We make sure that all of our images are timeless, whether it’s a wedding, a new baby or a family Christmas card we want our clients to look back on their photos 30 years from now and love their images as much as they did the day they saw them.

I think something that sets us apart is the love and joy we have in celebrating every milestone with our clients. We tear up when our brides walk down the aisle, we snuggle those kiddos and we truly walk away from each session feeling like our clients are our friends.

We recently launched something totally new and exciting that I think sets us apart even more; Photo Subscriptions. Photo Subscriptions were created to make sure that families aren’t just getting beautiful Christmas cards but that all of those other incredible moments are being captured all year long. They are for the mom whose children are growing up too fast, the small business owner who needs photos that reflect their beautiful talent and they’re for the blogger who constantly needs relevant and updated content.

We wanted to create a service that makes photos convenient and consistent for our clients. Each of our subscription levels offers a different number of photo sessions per year with lots of perks along the way! When I became a photographer I set out with intentions to capture someone’s true beauty and share it with them in a way they may have never seen themselves. I wanted to make sure that everyone had timeless and stunning photos of themselves or family.

When I think about what makes me the most proud there are many things that come to mind but the one that sticks out the most is working with a dear friend and her beautiful daughter Nora. Nora was diagnosed at 3 months old with Aicardi Syndrome, a really rare seizure disorder that has left her handicapped and medically fragile. I’ve been able to walk with Nora and Jesse through some really hard times and capture their lives just as they are, fragile, beautiful and inspiring.

Recently Nora joined a ballet class and came alive through dance. I had the honor of capturing her dance (assisted) across the stage for an audience of over 100k people (thanks to Social Media). It is by far one of the most incredible things I’ve been able to be a part of and because of my wonderful brides and families I get to give the gift of photos to families like Nora all across the globe.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would worry less about what’s trendy or popular and spent less time caring about what everyone else was doing and rushed full force into what made me come alive!
