Meet Jessica Wells of Born Beautiful Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wells.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I know it sounds cliche, but my love for photography began when I was about 10 years old. I’ll never forget the first time I wielded a disposable camera and the sound the gears made as I wound the film around that 35mm spool. The excitement of receiving my negatives from the lab was akin to birthday surprises and Christmas gifts. The love and eye for what to point the camera at and when to close the shutter grew throughout the years both from experience behind and in front of the lens.

Fast forward ten years and I found myself as an active duty service woman in the United States Navy. I bought my first vintage hard body 35mm film Minolta camera with my first paycheck. I didn’t know at the time that I wanted to be a photographer… I just took photos of the things that inspired me. Landscapes, animals, people, etc. In 2008 I separated from the Navy to pursue a new career and then married in 2009.

The flame became brighter with each new turn in my life’s path. Before long, I was taking photos of friend’s babies, families and then brides. Each opportunity has brought me to where I am today. I am now a lifestyle photographer in one of America’s finest cities! I am so humbled to have the amazing opportunity to photograph a couple’s love story. From their engagement to their wedding day and on to the anticipatory arrival of their first child. I get to be there to tell their story from behind my lens. How awesome is that?!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Heck, no! When I first decided that I wanted to start a business, I had asked an acquaintance/photographer if she had any tips. Her reply? “Good luck!” At the time, I was a little minnow in a decent sized pond in Pensacola, Florida. I wasn’t sure if I would sink or swim, but my ever supportive husband had my back. When I flailed, he threw me a preserver.

Nowadays, I struggle with quality over quantity in a beautiful city with photographers ranging from hobbyist to expert. I may get passed up for the less experienced photographer due to pricing, but I understand that budget is a concern for most families living in San Diego. I am one of them! However, I am blessed to find clientele who understand my art and what it is worth. I am no longer a minnow, but I’m not quite a barracuda. We’re working on it!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Born Beautiful Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Born Beautiful Photography’s name came from a dream. I’m not kidding! In this dream, I was photographing a newborn baby and a bride all in the same day. I kept saying, “what a beautiful baby!” and “What a beautiful bride”. I woke up and wrote down the words, “Born Beautiful”. Initially, I started off with the intentions of photographing bumps, babies and brides, but soon discovered that I loved the story line. Life itself is a beautiful gift! I couldn’t confine myself. So here I am with my husband nudging me on to pursue my dreams… capturing real life love stories featuring these wonderful people. I am extremely proud to call my clients friends and to be there for them throughout each major chapter in their lives. I believe that is what truly sets me apart from the sea of photographers out there. I sincerely want to develop a lasting relationship with my clients. They all get a special space in my heart and on my hard drive. Ha!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
While I currently operate on location and have a studio space within our home, I am looking forward to building a brick and mortar studio on our property. While my husband jokes that there isn’t a place my business doesn’t touch (I.E. my props have taken over our storage building, his garage and my studio), It will be nice to have a designated place to hold meetings, sessions and to sneak away to edit in peace. Shhhh! Don’t tell my husband & daughter! Speaking of my husband: while he’s not only a natural tosser at life preservers when I’m thinking that I’m drowning in a puddle, he’s also a pretty awesome second shooter/videographer. I am hoping to have him team up with me more in the future for bigger projects and weddings.
