Meet Joaquin Huertero of Sporting San Diego Soccer Club in La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joaquin Huertero.

Joaquin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sporting San Diego was founded by Joaquin Huertero in 2015 with the support of Board Members and their sponsor Dixieline Home and Lumber Centers. The journey begin with a group of soccer coaches that were looking for some change and wanted to be part of an environment where they could learn and affect as many young soccer players as possible. Our first year was of course a learning process and we made our fair share of mistakes. As board members, coaches and staff we all had our bumps in the road but this group is extremely resilient and supportive of one and other. As far as the club soccer world goes we are recognized as a small club which we are totally fine with. As far as we are concerned we would like to dig are feet firmly into the ground before we attempt to expand. The 2018 – 2019 season is underway and this is our fourth year as a Club we still feel we have a ton of room for growth when the time is right. For now we are doing our best to provide an environment where young soccer players can become decision makers on the field and make the right decisions while they our off the field.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was bumpy at first but nothing that we couldn’t handle as a group. It was more about getting the right people in place so we could move forward as an organization. We feel like we can help more youth soccer players if all our pieces are strategically placed within our administration and coaching staff. The players will only benefit the more organized we are. I think also shedding the image of a “new club” was a but tough but expected. We know that people are apprehensive about all new businesses and ours would not be any different. It took a solid three years before people started recognizing all the talented players, coaches and staff that we do have at Sporting San Diego.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sporting San Diego Soccer Club – what should we know?
The goal of the Sporting SD staff is to always focus on the “person” as much as the “player.” We are committed to improving the technical and tactical side of the game for each player, but, also teach them “lessons” that will go beyond the soccer field, enhancing self-esteem, promoting self-confidence and cultivating a lifelong passion for the game of soccer.

I think what sets us apart is the comradery between all the coaches and staff at our club. Everyone genuinely gets along and makes an effort to help one another. Does not mean we always get along and see eye to eye? No we do not but we have so much respect for one and understand that healthy banter is necessary in order to help one and other further our craft.

The comradery between all staff trickles down to all players in my opinion. Our players understand that this soccer journey is more about the game it is also about developing lifelong friends and relationships with teammates. This translates to teams that play harder for one and other and also makes them feel a sense of responsibility to their team and teammates.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Empathy – I try to put myself in the shoes of my coaches and players to the best of my ability. I understand that players and coaches make mistakes and everyone has their bad days. I respect the fact that everyone has a story and I enjoy hearing all of them. It has took some time to get to this point in my coaching career but it definitely feels like the right way to lead. I encourage our staff to find out what makes their players tick and to find out more about them than just their athletic endeavors.
