Meet Joe Decker of Gut Check Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Decker.

Gut Check Fitness Founder, Joe, is Guinness World Record Holder, World’s Fittest Man.

Gut Check Fitness was founded in 2006 in San Diego by Joe and his wife, Nicole. They started an affiliate program in 2013, fulfilling their dream of bringing their one-of-a-kind outdoor fitness company to cities around the world.

He is recognized as “The Worlds Fittest Man,” an ultra-endurance power athlete, renowned fitness trainer, and syndicated columnist who has helped thousands of women, men, kids and seniors get into shape and lose weight.

This outdoor workout format that he created is the same that he used to break the Guinness World Records® 24-Hour Physical Fitness Challenge in 2000. It works like no other program out there, getting people into the best shape of their lives.

He believes in leading by example and is a personal testament to overcoming addictions and obstacles. Once overweight and out of shape, he transformed his body and his life through an amazing journey from fat to fittest.

He has appeared on The Today Show, Discovery Health, The Early Show, The O’Reilly Factor, and Fox News and has been featured in The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Baltimore Sun, Men’s Fitness, Muscle and Fitness, Men’s Health, and GQ. To his surprise, People Magazine named him one of America’s 50 Most Eligible Bachelors in 2001.

In addition to breaking the world fitness record, he has competed in many of the world’s toughest endurance and adventure fitness events. Some of these include the Raid Gauloises, the Badwater 135, the Marathon des Sables (“The World’s Toughest Footrace”), the Grand slam of UltraRunning, and The Tough Guy Challenge in England.

After serving 3 years in the Army with the 10th Mountain Division, he graduated from Western Illinois University with a B.S. degree in Exercise Science. He founded his own high-speed fitness company working with individuals, groups, and corporate clients. He is regularly involved in charity work and has established a research foundation for childhood obesity from his winnings on The Weakest Link. He lives and works in the San Diego area.

Joe has been competing in Powerlifting for 23 years, Strongman Competitions for 10 years, and Ultra Running for about 10 years too. The daily and weekly workouts that he utilizes are a combination of his years of Extreme Competition experience, high-speed military background, top-notch college education, and rugged Mid-western farm upbringing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was a rocky start after moving to San Diego 11 years from DC as we didn’t know anyone and had to start our business from scratch. Getting new clients was not easy and I all most gave it up. At this time my wife, Nicole, was working three jobs to pay the bills as I tried to grow it. Finally, it started to pick up, she was able to come on full time and we’re now one of the top Outdoor Fitness companies in the World.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are known for leading world class Outdoor Fitness classes and for hosting some of the most challenging Outdoor Fitness Events in the World. If you want to get into the best shape of your life, you’ll come to Gut Check Fitness. We are truly about inspiring, motivating and ultimately empowering men, women and kids around the world. I am most proud of the fact that this company continues to set the standard in Outdoor Fitness. We are not about quick fixes, gizmos, gadgets, supplements, etc. but about hard work and results. What sets us apart is that we lead by example, our staff not only talks the talk but they can walk the walk by competing themselves in Ultra Marathons, Strongman, OCR events, you name it, we can train you for it.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been driven to be the best that I could be, unfortunately at times, regardless of if it was good or bad. I worked hard to be the best student and athlete in high school, the best soldier in the US ARMY, unfortunately the best at partying while working on Bourbon St. to the World’s Fittest Man. Interest wise, I’ve always enjoyed traveling and am an avid reader, oh and I’m sure my wife would say, risk taker too. My motto is, “If you ain’t living on the edge then you’re taking up too much space…”
