Meet John Ruzicka and Roberto Renovales of Rock Out Karaoke

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Ruzicka and Roberto Renovales.

John and Roberto , let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In the summer of 2006, our band had enjoyed a fair amount of success playing bars and restaurants in Pacific Beach, downtown La Jolla and other parts of San Diego. We decided to try an idea we’d seen in Vegas, where participants from the audience actually join the band on stage to sing. We partnered with what was then called RT’s Longboard in PB to launch Rock Out Karaoke every Wednesday night.

After tackling a few technical challenges, we were able to make the lyrics sync up with our live playing – so it really looked like ‘regular’ karaoke – except backed by the raw power of a live band. We quickly expanded to other parts of town and became busy with weddings, private events and corporate parties.

Fast forward 11 years, and we’ve played too many gigs to count (our guess is somewhere north of 500). Our corporate client list includes Kia Motors, Sunglass Hut, Jack in the Box, Kiehl’s, and so many more.

Better still, we continue to reach new audiences and help others unleash their inner rock star with us on stage.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All things considered, it has been a great ride. We’ve been able to build and maintain a successful client list – many of whom return to us year after year to provide entertainment for their large-scale events, holiday parties, and more. To us, one of the biggest measures of success is when past clients reach out to hire you again and again – and that’s something we’ve enjoyed for many years now.

We’ve got an incredible group of eight musicians who share responsibilities for the four-piece band – and we actually have the manpower to play two places at the same time. Add to that the handful of ROK ‘alums’ sprinkled around the country and we’re almost always able to say yes to any gig – even if it involves a bit of travel.

The best part is that we remain good friends and enjoy hanging out with each other. Unlike a lot of bands where you may hear of ‘creative differences,’ we’ve always maintained great professional and personal relationships. We attend our kids’ birthday parties, celebrate holidays, backyard cookouts – we’re like family and that shows through on stage as well.

Please tell us about Rock Out Karaoke.
Rock Out Karaoke combines the raw power of a live band with the interactivity of karaoke to present the most engaging and inclusive entertainment option in San Diego. Our mantra is to make our clients and their guests say wow – each and every time we play. People tend to forget the other details of an event but they’ll never forget being on stage with a live band belting out their favorite songs.

One of the biggest differentiators for us is that we do all our own booking. When you email or call us – an owner of the business will respond (not a booking agency). We make sure our clients know exactly what we do – and when we don’t feel like the right fit for a particular audience or event, we recommend other bands or refer the gig to someone we know and trust.

Finally, there are other bands who may allow others to sing on stage occasionally – but we’re San Diego’s longest running live band karaoke option. There’s a reason why we continue to show up in search results for karaoke – and we love the fans and friends who have helped us perfect our act over the years.
