Meet Jon Belmonte, Ryan Bettencourt and Josh Schlesser of Spoutable in Five Points

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Belmonte, Ryan Bettencourt and Josh Schlesser.

Jon, Ryan and Josh, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The company was started when six very talented and passionate folks with complementary skillsets decided they wanted to start a different kind of company. Rather than being pigeon-holed into pursuing one single idea, they wanted to test several ideas, and then pursue what emerged as the most viable idea(s). This was the beginning of Cursive Labs. The company raised $2.2M from an incredible set of investors, most of whom are based in San Diego.

After testing 3 businesses within the first 6 months, it was clear Spoutable was the idea on which we would focus entirely. Spoutable is a cutting-edge digital advertising platform that helps website publisher monetize their site traffic without placing ads all throughout their content.

The company is currently fueled by a tight-knit group of 10 incredibly talented folks across development, design, bus dev, customer success and ‘corporate’.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve been fortunate to see a lot of success to date. However, like all startups, Spoutable has experienced its share of ups and downs.

We’ve faced an everchanging marketplace, with its players at times impacted by the decisions and direction of Internet stalwarts Google, Facebook and Apple. By being nimble and responsive, we’ve often turned those potential challenges into market opportunities.

Digital advertising is a highly competitive space, and much of “the action” is in NYC, as well as Chicago, San Francisco, and L.A. Fortunately the company has tapped into its creativity and will-to-succeed, and shown strong market traction and revenue growth in each of its first 3 years of business.

Please tell us about Spoutable.
Spoutable was started as a way to help online publishers show advertising when their visitors are leaving the website, rather while they are enjoying the site’s content. This allows for an overall better user experience, and advertisers receive traffic that is ready for “what’s next”, as opposed to visitors that are very likely to quickly return to the referring website.

In the past two years, Spoutable has expanded to become the leading provider of highly-viewable-and-engaging advertising placements. The suite of beautiful “HiVE” ad units offers publishers very strong monetization capabilities and advertisers earn great return-on-ad-spend. The entire platform is built on top of Spoutable’s proprietary machine learning system, Ocho Bandito (which was also born out of Cursive Labs). Spoutable is one of the only platforms in the world that blends and optimizes across native content, display, and video ads.

In just its 3rd year of business, Spoutable boasts 750 publishers, 2B monthly ad impressions, and strong market momentum.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hmmm…good question. We probably would have more quickly integrated into a few of the demand and supply marketplaces that have since become industry standards.

That, and started flossing at a younger age.
