Meet Jonathan Kalman NMD of ActiveMed Integrative Health in Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Kalman NMD.

Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My drive has always been to be of service to others. In college, I knew I wanted to be in health care, but was having difficulty determining which path to take. I was drawn to the practice of medicine, but not in the traditional ways. I was searching for a profession that emphasized prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine filled that niche due to its inclusivity of modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.

Throughout the last 15 years of practicing medicine, I have had the opportunity to train and work as a medic and firefighter. This opened up more doors of opportunity including being hired as a medical duty chief for the Burning Man Organization. I also volunteer with medical and harm reduction teams at music festivals around Southern California. I have been fortunate to design and teach an emergency medicine course for an international relief group and also led a group of doctors to Haiti post-earthquake in 2010. I have also had the pleasure to be the chief safety officer for some cave research projects in Nevada and adventures in Mexico.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The past 30 years has seen an extraordinary increase in consumer demand for safe, effective and cost-effective natural health care. Naturopathic medicine has emerged as the health-care profession best suited to meet this demand.

Despite the demand, public education around the availability of licensed naturopathic doctors has been challenging. Incredulously, there are people in the state of California who present themselves to the public as naturopathic doctors, yet have no formal medical education or training.

I was hired by the CA Department of Consumer Affairs as an expert witness, to assist in investigating these individuals and to put a stop to the fraudulent behavior of practicing medicine without a license.

I am currently in private practice utilizing restorative and regenerative medicine, in order to heal the causes of chronic musculoskeletal pain. I accomplish this by utilizing specialized techniques like prolotherapy/ozone therapy, platelet-rich plasma, amniotic growth factors and bone marrow stem cell injections to encourage healing of chronic injuries.

Many of my patients are men and so I also offer men’s wellness treatments to address big picture issues that affect their healing of musculoskeletal problems. I assess and treat endocrine/hormone issues with both diets, exercise, nutrients and hormone replacement therapy.

There has been a tremendous growth in my practice when I trained in and began offering Gainswave shockwave therapy and Priapus Platelet Injections to the male genitalia in order to improve vigor and to help reverse erectile dysfunction. These niche procedures are an innovative way to address erectile dysfunction without having to rely on standard drug therapy.
