Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Lopez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jorge. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1983, I move back to Mexico to follow my studies at the University of Monterrey Nuevo Leon, in there I was introduce to football. I start playing football to get a scholarship, I did it for a year. After that, I was introduce to Karate which I follow in love, for that day on I dedicated all my time to practice karate and compete in National and Pan Americans Competitions, that was a great experience but my dream was to open a Karate school and help people to change theirs life for better like the Art help me.
In 1990, I decide to come back to the USA when I got here, I didn’t find the same style of karate that I was practice in the pass, I did two different styles, in the last one I help to teach, there was a Head instructor and the owner at that school after four years they split off the head instructor took the majority of the students to open his own.
I stayed as a head instructor, at the same time I was working in my regular job a lot of hours and weekends it was really hard for me to concentrate in both, the business needs a lot of attention.
In 2007, the company that I was working for was bought for another company we end up with no job, at the same time the owner of the Karate school decide to move and close down school, he offer it to me but I didn’t have enough money to buy school, so the school was closed, twenty students follow me. With a lot struggles, I rent a small place. After a year, I had close to seventy students. I was happy that the recession after September 11 thing was really hard a lot of struggles. How I have been able to go through many ups and downs? Is the Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality, the power to change the face of things, and my biggest rewards of this! Is That I had change the life of a lot of people especially young kids.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s a lot of challenges specially for a Spanish speaker with an accent, it was really hard to convince people that I was the right person to teach their kids and give them the correct information, in many times I just want to give up the money was not enough to pay the bills for the business, but I don’t like to give up that easy, and people that can see that I was doing something good and my intentions was in the right path, and giving their kids the right tools for the future life ask me to hang on, made me keep going, until now I keep in touch with so many people in the USA and many other Countries.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kaigan Karate-Do – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
