Meet Jose Diaz of San Diego HS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Diaz.

Jose, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Currently, 1 of the music directors at San Diego HS. However, I am also deployed overseas as a member of the California National Guard. I’ve been a teacher in the school district for over ten years but my current teaching career spans 17 years.

The last 4 years has been at San Diego HS trying very hard to rebuild the music program. 4 years ago, we started with roughly about 30 music students and to date the program has grown to serve nearly 300 students offering a wide variety of musical ensembles and classes. I hope to continue building the program with my colleagues and staff members once I return from Deployment

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Obviously, managing the world of the military and teaching has been difficult. I’ve been called away to assist with fires and this time with a mission overseas.

Fundraising as the program grows is always difficult as funds are finite.

Please tell us about San Diego HS.
Serving the community is at the forefront of our mission. Whether it be a concert a rally, December nights, rock n roll marathon m, pet parade we try and have a contingent supporting all the local San Diego events.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being in music myself. I learned the value of music early on and it certainly has contributed to my career choices in life.
