Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Mustin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joseph. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The process started when I bought my first camera in 2006 on deployment in the US Navy. We stopped in Singapore where I picked up a digital Konica Minolta with a 1gb USB card. Filled the card up on the first day! I have a photographic memory and I grew up in the country of Oklahoma where the skies are beautiful and the grass is every shade of green. After I left the Navy, I did some contracting overseas in Afghanistan where I furthered my passion. Once I returned, I started going to school for Digital Photography at the Art Institute of California-San Diego, currently in my last quarter of the bachelor’s program.
Throughout my courses, I’ve been collaborating with many talents, working as a professional, and managing my art collective (@thewallartshowcollective). I love what I do, and I love to motivate those around me. This process is a great one and I enjoy every minute of it. I currently practice photography in portraits, weddings, lifestyle, events, and studio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a struggle trying to balance life. I’m a father of one, full-time student, a full-time photographer, curator, collaborator, and mentor and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I believe wholeheartedly in doing what makes you happy, and this is what makes me happy on so many levels. I always dreamed of doing what I love as a Job, and this is ideal! Every “job” has its turmoil, ups and downs, and overall drama, but if you can manage to find something that energizes you and motivates others then I think you found a win. Every path taken to greatness is different, I hope the path I’m in is lined with challenges that make a better person and create a life that’s fitting of the work I put in.
Please tell us about Jmportfolio/Freebasephotos/TheWallArtShowCollective.
I specialize in event photography, which is a job not to be taken lightly. I also shoot weddings, portraits, lifestyle, and studio photography on a regular basis. I’m very big on networking and showing people what I can do with my process. I’m proud that my companies have grown in recognition, quality, and awareness. I’m more aware of what people need, I recognize how to reach them, and bring a great quality of work to keep them coming back! What set’s me apart is my drive, and knowing how to understand people. Practicing my craft all the time allows me to hone in on the details and bring ideas to life with the best of them!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have bought more gear early on to set myself up for far more successes. Unfortunately, photography is an expensive business and it takes some of the best equipment to get the job done. I have learned lessons on how to get things done with less, but would much rather skip the line to what’s best. Also, dive head first into your craft! Don’t wait for permission to be great, no one will ever give it to you.
