Meet Josh McCorkle of Copper Top Coffee & Donuts in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh McCorkle.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are two friends from Seattle who started our coffee journey at a company called Zoka in Seattle. Zoka prided itself on high-quality beans and direct relationships with the farms they sourced from. We wanted to bring that to San Diego. After seeing the growth of drive-thru coffee in the North West, we had the inclination to bring high-quality coffee in a drive-thru setting here to San Diego, where we now call home.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not even close! From finding the right location to opening our doors it’s been a long road.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Copper Top Coffee & Donuts – what should we know?
When we built this brand, we wanted to commit ourselves to the community first and foremost. As a coffee company, that starts at the farm level. We take pride in the ethical purchasing of our coffee beans. “Ethically sourced and farm-traced” means that we don’t buy from farms unless we know the working conditions are optimal for those picking our beans.

At the store level, we are very committed to this Hillcrest community. We are constantly doing whatever we can to help raise awareness and donate wherever possible. In the last six months of being open, we have donated to local schools, The Center here in Hillcrest, charities working with the local military, and Feeding San Diego is next on our list.

We take a lot of pride in hiring friendly, energetic staff, who are socially conscious, and know this is more than just a coffee and donut shop. That being said, we think we have a pretty awesome product too!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Customer service. We opened a coffee shop because we love coffee ourselves. Almost too much some might say! That being said, when we go to our favorite coffee shops, we enjoy the full experience. From the warm greeting to someone remembering our drinks just the way we like them, it’s part of our morning ritual. And we believe that’s extremely important to offer here out of our humble little shop.

The products speak for themselves. Everything on our menu is hand selected. Whether it’s our coffee, made-to-order donuts, kombucha on tap, breakfast sandwich, smoothies, etc. We’ve spent endless hours making sure that every individual item is one that would bring someone back.
