Meet Josh Mitchell of Your Face Is Rad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Mitchell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got interested in photography as digital cameras began to become the standard over film cameras in the early 2000s. As a hobbyist getting more and more interested in the medium, I began to upgrade cameras at a relatively quick pace. Looking back at the early days I’m not sure my skills moved as fast as the gear upgrades did, but my friends at least began to perceive my skills to be in line with the camera “arms race” I had begun.

More and more I began to get people asking me to take their photos, which is how my love for portraiture began. The official start of making my hobby a business began when I started taking on the responsibility of photographing weddings. While there is no real official right or wrong way to begin a career in photography, in hindsight I would have done things a lot differently! Instead, I started to really delve into wedding photography, eventually bringing my wife Melissa onboard as a second photographer for my wedding photography business.

Towards the end of 2008, we were able to go full time, and we worked a number of years as a husband and wife wedding photography team in Chicago, Portland Oregon, and later San Diego. While we still do weddings on occasion, we’ve found our true passion is working with businesses in branding campaigns, portrait sessions, and taking headshots. We re-branded our photography business to become Your Face Is Rad.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Attempting to make a living as a creative is never easy. A lot of times you’ll hear creatives say that it’s 10% art and 90% business and marketing – and that part is very much true.

I’d say our biggest struggles have been re-establishing our business after moving to different markets, and then really honing in on the niche in photography that we’re most interested in. And of course, our current challenge is getting a new name and brand out there to the community we serve!

Please tell us about Your Face Is Rad.
Your Face Is Rad is a photography company that focuses primarily on working with businesses – small or large. We offer a few different services. Branding photography is creating custom photos that convey a message for a business. It can be images of a product being used, a storefront environment, and interactions with the business and their customers. It’s a very custom process, and when we do our Brand Stories we spend quite a bit of time investigating the messages and values of a company and then creating a plan to convey that in imagery.

Our other primary specialty is portraiture and headshots. Businesses these days have come to understand that the public really wants to know who they are on a personal level. Having great photos of yourself that really show your personality and approachability is a key component in building trust and brand identity. Our aim is to make this process fun and as non-intimidating as having a lens pointed at you can be.

What sets us apart is our desire to create a final product that not only helps your business succeed but also helps put a dent in the notion that many of our clients have that they are not photogenic. What goes into a good photo can be part artistic talent, fancy equipment, and great lighting. The primary component we believe is a connection between the photographer and the subject and our desire to make you look your very best.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we could turn back time we’d have focused our education on business and marketing. We also would have been way better networkers, and of course discovered this area of photography that we love much, much sooner.
