Today we’d like to introduce you to JR Jarris.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started off as a rapper sophomore year of high school. I recorded pretty much every day and wrote every day. My favorite part of all of that really was when I got to mix my vocals down and add effects to make it sound “cool”. Little did I know that I was actually in love with producing. Around a junior year, I purchased an Akai mpd32 (midi beat pad) and downloaded reason 5. I immediately started making beats, not good ones but I was still having so much fun. I would make beats and show them to my friends, nothing serious at all just having fun.
Around 4-5 years ago I discovered Soulection that really changed the way I listen to music. I kept producing and having fun but slowly getting recognition for it. I still to this day will never get used to someone saying they love my music it’s such a blessing! Joe Kay (Co-founder of Soulection) had messaged me on SoundCloud around that time I started getting recognition and that blew my mind. I then met Andre power who helped me A LOT to get to where I am right now.
I started DJing and going to a lot of gigs. I then got my first show where I curated the whole thing and landed my first month at space bar in city heights. From there I started traveling the world and playing in different cities. It’s so amazing and humbling and I love it so much.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. A lot of failing HARD and learning HARD. Most recently I learned that I need to protect myself and know my worth. Never get taken advantage of. Never again.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I produce music and throw an event in SD called Hide And Go Freak. Hide and go freak is something special because I love bringing such different vibes that San Diego has never seen before! Bringing different energy from all over the place.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I can say sometimes I may have gotten lucky but I like to think of it as fate. Everything happens for a reason.
