Meet Julia Satterlee of Flourish Spa & Wellness Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Satterlee.

Julia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
About 7 years ago, I suffered a debilitating neck injury that caused me so much pain I couldn’t sleep, work or practically move. I saw several MDs who prescribed pain killers and then scheduled me for a cortisone steroid injection, for which I couldn’t get in until 3 months later. While waiting for this injection, I had to just try to make it through the day however I could. This was a scary time. I have always been very active and an athlete and I had heard stories and knew people who had had neck and back surgeries and injuries. I remembered a client of mine from when I was an attorney who had to have a metal cage surgically inserted into his neck. This terrified me. I worried that if the problem didn’t resolve or got worse my quality of life would be compromised.

Finally, on the evening before the injection, I had an “accidental” (I don’t believe in accidents anymore) encounter with a husband and wife chiropractic team. They basically said to me, “We will do whatever it takes to talk you out of having that injection.” They shared with me that while the injection would give me some temporary relief, it wouldn’t address the underlying issue and the long-term effects were not clear and could be detrimental. Without really knowing why, I committed to exploring alternative therapies and cancelled the appointment, which I had been desperate to have. I didn’t know at the time that this would lead me down a path that would radically alter my life.

During one of my chiropractic sessions, the Doctor explained his philosophy of chiropractic care and that for him it was about “letting in the light” to areas that are compressed or congested or blocked by inflammation, in addition to teaching me about how other lifestyle changes, like nutrition and specifically clean eating, would impact my body in ways I couldn’t even begin to fathom. This became a metaphor for the journey I found myself on. As part of this process of letting in the light and cleaning out the clutter, I discovered the wisdom of teachers like Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Don Miguel Ruiz and Eckhart Tolle. One thing was very clear to me at that time, that while I had always been a very positive person, I had never paid much attention to the way I was speaking of and to myself. I realized all of the ways I engaged in negative self-talk and how damaging that was to my awareness of my Divine essence. I understood, all of a sudden, that I didn’t truly love myself and therefore wasn’t engaging in the kind of self-care that is required for true health and wellbeing. I understood, at a very deep level, that wellness is not something we get from others, it’s something we give ourselves. We have the power to nourish our bodies, minds, hearts and souls. As a side note: It’s no wonder that I also was in a “relationship” with someone who was emotionally and physically unavailable, for whom I made excuses and with whom I allowed myself to be treated like the lowest priority.

I spent many months of caring for my health and my body with holistic alternative therapies and paying attention to how positive energy, thoughts and self-expression were also contributing to my improved health and well-being. Not only did the pain and mobility issues in my neck improve dramatically, but I had more energy, a greater sense of peace and calm and an overall joy and satisfaction with my life. In fact, it was at that time that I starting saying, “I love my life!” This doesn’t mean everything was easy or that I had no challenges, but I knew that I could manage whatever came up and that I had the strength and awareness to continue creating the life and wellbeing I wanted. Because of this new-found knowledge, it became clear to me that I wanted to totally immerse myself in the world of wellness, consciousness and self-care. So, I quit my lucrative, but soul-draining job as an Executive Recruiter and started at the bottom as a receptionist in a reflexology spa. A few years later, after following my intuition and spending a couple months helping out a friend in Miami, it was time to make my next move. I decided to heed the call I’d been hearing, but ignoring, for a couple of years and move to LA. Quite by accident, I mean, design, I began working for a remarkable woman with a lovingly intentional spa and wellness business who taught me and inspired me in so many ways. Through conversations about the possibility of my acquiring her company, the spark in me and the belief that I could, own and run my own business again, was re-ignited.

After negotiations to buy her company dissolved and an opportunity to buy a similar company back east didn’t materialize, I finally realized, why am I waiting to buy someone else’s business? I can start my own business and build it from the ground up, with complete creative control, exactly the way I want it, and serve the people I really wanted to serve. This is how, and why, Flourish was born.

After having many experiences which showed me how I didn’t want to feel (which is a valuable process), I got really clear on how I did want to feel. And above all, I wanted to feel good. But also, creative, connected, generous and juicy.

This journey has revealed to me a few things I “know for sure” (As Oprah likes to say):

It’s all connected. Mind, body, heart and soul. Feed one, feed them all. Neglect one, they all suffer, but your body will let you know the loudest and quickest!

It’s all energy. Our bodies, the external world, love, work, being and energy can be moved, shaped, summoned, manipulated, if you will, by our thoughts, feelings and words.

The only area of our lives we have any control over IS our words, our thoughts and our feelings. We have the power to manipulate our energy and therefore to create our lives. We have the power to create our well-being. We have the power to feel good. When we feel good, we do good. I want you to take the back the power to feel good. I want to connect you to the resources, services and people who can help you feel good again…and flourish.

Feel, good, again. (Lather, rinse, repeat).

Has it been a smooth road?
Getting to the point where I decided to start my own company, and not take over someone else’s was not smooth sailing. There were delays and frustrations and road blocks. Which, I believe, was part of the plan. Once I decided to pursue my dreams and start a company built on my vision and my values, everything smoothed out and started to flow. It’s not easy in the sense that it’s not hard work, but it has ease and flow and grace because I feel aligned with my purpose.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Flourish Spa & Wellness Services story. Tell us more about the business.
We are an upscale, mobile spa services company. We bring the spa to our clients, in their homes, offices, hotel rooms, really anywhere. It’s our mission to bring wellness and rejuvenation to everyone that needs it. Our “Spa Artisans” bring everything to create a relaxing, luxurious spa experience. Every Flourish service comes with a complimentary aromatherapy candle, which is the clients to keep, a customized music playlist that we build for each client based on their musical tastes and mood and always ends with our signature “Flourish” which is an extra 5 minutes of attention to wherever the client is the most sore or tense. In addition, some of our packages, such as our Romance Package come with our private label wine in the client’s choice of red or white, artisanal, hand-crafted chocolates and other upgrades like therapeutic aromatherapy oils and herbal foot therapy. What distinguishes Flourish is that we are committed to a highly personalized experience with 5 star customer service. We delight in matching each client with the perfect practitioner for their needs and preferences. While there are other mobile spa and massage companies out there, and they do a great job, we like to say they are like the Uber of mobile spa services and we are like the stretch limo. We cater to an upscale, discriminating clientele who is serious about their wellness and relaxation and desire an unforgettable experience.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are currently expanding into the Los Angeles area and expect to be in 3 more cities by the end of 2017. Eventually, our goal is to be in every major city, so that our clients can have the Flourish experience wherever they go! A brick and mortar spa is also in the exploratory phase.
