Meet Julie Ducharme of Julie’s Party People in Coronado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Ducharme.

Julie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Fifteen years ago, I was finishing up my Masters in business and working for a company as princess and I realized they were doing a pretty poor job with the business. I decided I could create something better that stood for quality entertainment. So I started Julie’s Party People. The first month I thought we would just do a couple events but did around 20 and that is when I realized I needed to start hiring people and made this into a legitimate full time running business. Since our first start we have expanded to more than just characters of princess and super heroes. We added in equipment of jumps, tables, chairs and more. We service corporate events, the cities, private events, kids’ parties and even weddings.

Today, we have 15-20 workers typically working for us more if it’s the busy season. We on regular basis service anywhere from 15-25 events in a weekend. Busy season it could be even more. Our mission is to continue to service San Diego with quality service entertainment and I am proud to say we do that. We even still have clients from when we first start 15 years ago still using us today. We build long lasting relationships with our clients as well.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any business you have your ups and downs. In San Diego in a 5 year period we have two major fires that really impacted our business because we had to cancel everything for weeks and then people were rebuilding so they were not spending money on business like ours but we held on and stuck it out and weathered the storm. The last 3 years we have had major growth and we hope to be able to lic this business model. I want to empower women to be able to run a business like this from their home and be able to take care of their family and have flexibility in their life and not be tied to a desk from 8-5 every day. I love that you can be out in the field working in this company.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a kid’s entertainment company that services kids’ birthday parties, corporate events, weddings, carnivals just about any event that needs our services. Even Zombie marathons. We have characters princess, super heroes, mascots, jumps, tables, chairs, and much more equipment.

What I a most proud about our company is people come to us because they know we give quality service. Where many companies like ours do not offer that.

I think what sets us apart is I really keep this a family run business so our employees feel that they are cared for and taken care of and are not just some number. I am also proud to be a business owner of a company that has been around for 15 years. Not many business can say that.

What were you like growing up?
I spent a lot of time growing up around my dad and grandfather who both owned their own business. I learned a lot and I think the entrepreneurial spirit I was born with from when I was young I was figuring out ways to start my own business. I even started my first mini company when I was in college. I didn’t make much but it was my first start up.

I was also an athlete I was recruited to play basketball and volleyball in college and played after college as well. I love sports and I think that discipline helped shape me into the disciplined business owner I am today and it gave me the grit to make it thought the touch times in business. You need thick skin to make it in the small business world.

Personality wise I am a bit of a joker, love to have fun and laugh and I think that is why I love my business you have to laugh, play with kids have fun and the best thing is watching a young kid see their dream come true with their favorite character coming to their party. I never get tired of seeing that.

Now I love to paddle board, kayak, and read a great book when I have time but I run a very busy schedule so I don’t get to do that as much as I like.
