Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Smith.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My creative career started as a rambunctious 4 years old obsessed with my mother’s tall boots and vintage wrap dresses. I went on to pairing outfits from hi-end boutiques, (where I spent a large portion of my babysitting money) with pieces found in “hole in the wall” vintage stores (where I acquired many of my most beloved pieces like a pair of 70’s light wash hi waisted denim). With a degree in business management and fashion design, I was fortunate to make a career of my childhood past time and became a clothing designer in New York City.
I moved out to San Diego for love, (I followed a really cute guy I met on a snowboard trip) and never looked back. This life change completely altered my design path. Instead of dreaming up the next trend in denim, I found myself consumed with all things interior design. From fashion to interiors my design recipe has always had a synergy of masculine and feminine and a mix of old and new. Jula Cole Design is the result of these two worlds colliding.
Has it been a smooth road?
As lucky as I am to be doing what I love, it is still a business and with that comes accounting… yuck. Anyone who works in this industry knows that it is never entirely smooth, there is always something that needs fixing or some little detail that went unnoticed. My goal is always to be the advocate for my client by helping resolve these issues no matter the size. I always tell a story of a bathroom renovation gone wrong that ended up one of the most amazing bathrooms I have done to date. I walk away from these sometimes grueling experiences with a space I am proud of and a client that ends up a friend.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jula Cole Design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Jula Cole Design is a full-service boutique interior design firm. We focus primarily on residential design with the occasional commercial project. We specialize in custom tailored spaces catered to each client that work both functionally and fashionably.
We start out with a mood that matures into a concept and right away into loose sketching. We work closely with our trade partners such as architects and contractors to work out all the logistics of this concept including drawings to scale with all measurements, material choices and detailed directions on all finishes. We obsess over every detail from the macro space planning down to the smallest accessory placed on the shelf.
I am so proud of how much this company has grown in a short time. Not being a huge design firm enables us to more intimately service each client, it is through these interactions that clients have become friends. Cheesy as it may sound I strive to walk away from every client’s space saying, “Hell yea! I am proud of how that turned out and they are happy!”. This is a career fueled by passion and I am completely emotionally invested in my projects which can be stressful but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like how active this city is and that we live in a climate that is conducive to that lifestyle. Much of the focus here is around the home and that makes this industry very rewarding. I, however, do miss much of the culture, fashion and the people watching that New York offers.
