Today we’d like to introduce you to Kali Stewart.
Hi Kali, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Although I was an athlete growing up, I had always struggled with being overweight. When I graduated from college I took a summer job as a personal trainer before applying to graduate school. That summer I ate with more intention, exercised more consistently, and lost 40 pounds, transforming my health. I realized how powerful movement and strength are for longevity and living a great life. I decided to pursue a career in fitness. Today, I help people stay accountable and consistent to living a healthy lifestyle. My approach to fitness is holistic and all-encompassing. What makes you feel alive? What gives you energy? How do we keep your body thriving so that you can continue to do the activities you love and enjoy?
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After about a decade of working for other people, I realized that I had a deep desire to create my own space for fitness. I wanted to improve on what I saw and experienced in other settings. I had a vision for creating a family-like environment where everyone felt welcomed and could be uplifted.
I opened SCEND right before the pandemic started. It was a trying time but I believed in the value of fitness and what we were offering. More than ever people knew that they needed to be healthy. I believe in the way that fitness uplifts us. It was during that first year where I really saw how much support and love was around me. From the amazing trainers I work side by side with each day to the dedicated support of our clients pivoting with us to stay afloat, we all rode that wave together. The pandemic made us stronger and more resilient as a business and a community. SCEND exists because of the amazing community around us.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SCEND is about the people. We lead with a person-centered approach. Each session is geared towards the specific needs of the client physically, mentally, and spiritually. Each time someone walks through the doors we ask questions like, How are you feeling? How did you sleep last night? How has your eating been? What kind of stress are you feeling today? Have you been getting your steps in? What intentions do you want to set for this week? Through this subjective feedback we are able to tailor their workout programs and build healthy habits. Also, we really like to have fun, smile, and joke around with our people. Each of our trainers brings that positive energy into SCEND.
Second, our approach to exercise is science-based. I am a total nerd and love to provide people with evidence-based workouts because I know that they’re safe, effective, and get results. This is true for the professional skateboarders, surfers, and recreational athletes we work with as well as the parents staying fit. I can relax into the sessions knowing that there is a rationale and a framework for the strength training that each client is performing. Their longevity is always in the back of my mind.
And then lifestyle. How do we help our clients create balance with their very busy lives with their fitness routine? This goes back to effectiveness. With the limited time people have to devote towards their daily activity, I want to ensure that the client is getting the “biggest bang for their buck” during our training sessions. This comes down to the assessments we do to determine what exactly that client should be training in the gym with us and what guidance we can provide for them outside of our session times. If I can help nudge someone closer to optimal health, I am happy. My advice to everyone: Find movement that you love and enjoy because it will be the most intrinsically rewarding and it will sustain you.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Great question. I have a lot of beautiful memories about my family, my grandmother, and all the animals I grew up around. There was so much loving energy in my home. I am lucky to have love and support from my family. My parents have always encouraged me to pursue my passions and be authentically myself. I think that is the best overarching memory I have: total support and love.
