Meet Karen Molina of Fun Lab Art in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Molina.

Karen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I studied Art and graduated with an MFA degree from the Academy of Art, San Francisco. I worked as a digital artist in the video game industry for over a decade, crafting virtual characters, worlds, and concept art. Becoming a mother has shifted my life from the game development trenches, over to raising my daughter in the best nurturing environment possible. Seeing my daughter’s face light up at face painting parties, sparked my interest and curiosity. Conveniently, my raw artistic and illustration abilities, translated over to face painting seamlessly and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, my first year of face painting has been a smooth road. I’m having a pleasant time and thoroughly enjoying craft especially when I see both children and adults light up with their final pieces. I definitely see myself doing this for the foreseeable future. My biggest obstacle at the moment is marketing my service. Marketing is quite a time-consuming process and proving to be more work than I had anticipated.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fun Lab Art story. Tell us more about the business.
My business name is Fun Lab Face & Body Art
– Providing fun-imaginative face painting and body art services for parties, events, and individual sessions in the San Diego area.

I am the artist and business owner. I am proud of every party and event I have worked on. I get a 100% satisfaction from the guests and clients. My clients often tell me they see and since I have a strong art background that can fulfill their spontaneous custom requests. On a separate note, I’ve expanded my services to watercolor pet portraits and teaching art classes.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
In all honesty, attending a kids birthday party with my 6 yr. old is how got inspired to start my business. I vividly remember the sheer joy on her face when she saw her reflection and I thought to myself “Hey, I can totally do this too”.
