Meet Kat Brown of Finest City Improv in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Brown.

Kat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Finest City Improv was first founded to create space in San Diego for performers to be able to be on stage and get learning opportunities without having to drive all the way to Los Angeles.

We found that more and more, students were looking to do more than just be on stage. They wanted a community of supportive friends, a safe space to cultivate courage, and a fun and unique way to spend their free time. Finest City Improv became that and so much more.

With over 800 students and counting that completed our level 1 series, it became a goal to bring JOY to San Diegians that needed an outlet to laugh and play like a kid again.

Has it been a smooth road?
When you try to get someone to join an improv class, it is not an easy sell. Most people are too afraid to even see a show in fear of being dragged on stage and embarrassed. (Which is never what we ACTUALLY do!)

Improv–being in the moment, sharing control with your team, being spontaneous, all these factors are deeply rooted in fears that many have. It’s no joke when public speaking is often listed as the second fear (after dying!) How could we tell people that improv isn’t about being funny or being the loudest person in class, it was about cultivating the unique strengths of individuals.

Our students who come to us need a chance to see what improv is really about, so we offer free classes which were a huge turning point in getting people into our community.

We often laugh as well that getting people into a theatre on a Friday night to see a show is no easy task either. Our number one competitor is Netflix and a comfy blanket at home. We try to make our theatre the most warm and welcoming environment possible so that people turn off the TV and come check out live comedy!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Community–hands down. Our main focus has been how we can personally relate with every student, client, theatre guest, artist, the list goes on.

We share a simple mission statement: More Joy. Guaranteed. This means that every person you meet at FCI is a smiling, happy, open person. We call every student to see how their classes are. We remember names, we tell stories. We are a community of people that seek the theatre as a second home and as a staff member, I am always so amazed to see that our guests honor this and that our community grows daily.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! We are in need of more art! As a theatre artist my entire life, I am constantly in awe of how much this city has to offer as inspiration. We have beautiful land marks, the endless bounty of nature, and interesting people that call San Diego home.

We are a thriving hub that I hope continues to support art in all forms, but especially improv! For more than just laughs, but for it’s amazing transformational benefits as well.
