Meet Kate Garcia of With Flourish

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Garcia.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I swear I was born a flower child. From an early age, I went out of my way to stop, gawk and pick flowers. This early obsession followed me to my college years where I studied English and was often referred to as “that short girl with the big glasses and yellow flowers in her hair.” What can I say, there was a daisy bush right next to my dorm!

Because of this passion and reputation, I had the opportunity to design the flowers for a few friend’s weddings and enjoyed every second of the late nights and extra long weekends, working to create something beautiful for their special moment. I felt that my love for my friends and my excitement for their marriage was translated through my hands and into the arrangements. I knew I had found my superpower.

After I finished college I got a job as a teacher. I taught middle school for three years and loved so many things about it, but I felt that I needed a creative outlet. I also wanted a sustainable career that allowed me to take care of my family. And so I casually started a website with pictures from my past weddings and told friends and family that I was thinking about doing some floral design within the next few years.

However, my plans dramatically shifted when requests started flooding in! As I met with clients I realized- these weren’t just friends of friends being kind and looking for a deal but individuals who actually loved my style and wanted me to make their day special!

While this was SO exciting, I still hadn’t booked enough to equal what I made teaching. But hope propelled me forward.

So, I took a leap of faith and decided to pursue floral design full time. I haven’t looked back since. There have been struggles, criticism, crying babies, wasted time and money, and many whispers in my head- “What made you think you could do this?”. Somehow though, those whispers are drowned out by the dancing of my hands over beautiful flowers and I know that I am where I am meant to be.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s funny that I started this business to spend more time with my family because balancing my work and life has been a real struggle. I actually had another baby girl about a month ago! So now I’m trying to balance a growing full-time business, our very spunky 2 and a half-year-old, Annalise, and our sweet newborn Penelope. Talk about a crazy snuggly home! I want so much to spend every minute I can with them but at the same time, so much of my mind is focused on making an incredible experience for my clients.

That, AND cooking, cleaning, washing dirty floral buckets, prepping thorny roses, changing poopy diapers, breastfeeding in the middle of the night, answering emails, writing up proposals and remembering that I am only human. Hour by hour I am learning how to give myself grace, remembering that snuggling fixes everything, and God is faithful and in control of my every hour. After all, that is the first step in flourishing.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the With Flourish story. Tell us more about the business.
FLOURISH: To be in a vigorous state; to thrive/ to be in one’s prime; be at the height of excellence/to grow luxuriantly, or thrive in growth as a plant. I named my floral design business With Flourish for three main reasons:

1- Flowers. I feel myself take a breath and rest in an overwhelmed stillness whenever I even attempt to describe them. They are God’s flourish on the top of this cake of a world. I know they are an integral part of sustaining life but they just seem they unnecessarily beautiful! I mean did they really need to come in every shape and color?

Deep burgundy astilbe, hot orange pincushions, tiny white chamomile, midnight blue delphinium- oh I could go on and on and on! I am a practical, minimalist person to a fault who loves beautiful things. So, to see such lavish beauty thrown into every nook and cranny of the world just for the glory of it! Now that’s flourishing! I strive to create arrangements that emanate the beauty of nature

2- I want to flourish. Everyone does, right? For me this means doing a job I love, creating, being healthy and loving my family well. When I took the leap to start this business my hope of flourishing was one of the things that propelled me forward.

3- It is my greatest hope that my brides flourish on their wedding day. One time I went to a bride’s house to drop off the bridal party’s bouquets. There were “oohs” and “ahhs” and “thanks” from the bridal party, I said good-bye and walked back down the hallway to leave. I heard someone shout my name and turned around to see the bride in her pajamas, makeup half finished running towards me. As she got closer I realized she was crying.

“Oh no, what’s WR-” I started saying before she cut me off. “Nothing, nothing. I just wanted to tell you how incredibly thankful I am. Your bouquet is everything that I dreamed about holding as I walked down the aisle to meet my husband.”

I think about this interaction every time I make a bridal bouquet. It embodies everything I hope for my business; namely that the bride and her and her fiance’s marriage will FLOURISH.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I love my job, I love serving my clients, and therefore I would love to grow. It is also a dream of mine to train up other wonderful, talented, passionate individuals and grow a team.
