Meet Kate Mills | Family & Child Photographer

We are thrilled to be connecting with Kate Mills again. Kate is a Family & Child Photographer and is also a content partner. Content partners help Voyage in so many ways from spreading the word about the work that we do, sponsoring our mission and collaborating with us on content like this. Check out our conversation with Kate below.

Hi Kate, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
Hi, I’m Kate! I’m a born & raised San Diego-an (bonus points if you catch the reference). I live in the Bonita area (southeast San Diego County) with my husband & two young kiddos, Grayson & Maddie.

I originally went to college to be an elementary school teacher, because even though I listed “photographer” on literally all of the Myspace surveys that asked for my dream job, I never really thought normal people actually got to do stuff like that for careers. It was only after I graduated from SDSU & backpacked Europe with my (now) husband for 3 months that I realized just HOW much I loved photography & decided to follow my dreams. I finally gave myself permission to start my business in the spring of 2009, and I haven’t looked back since.

I dabble in all areas of photography, but my primary focus is on families & children. I love capturing the “in between” moments at all of my sessions, and my style is a mix between posed & candid captures.

What should families consider when looking to book a family portrait session?
I think chemistry with the photographer is the number one most important thing to consider when booking. There are photographers for every type of personality, and when you find a photographer you mesh well with, it’s magical. I’m very upbeat, friendly, and playful, so I work best with families that are the same way. Of course, you need to make sure you love their work & editing style as well, but I always suggest reading About Me sections on photographer websites & looking for someone who sounds like they could be your best friend.

What makes you different from other photographers?
I’ve been in business full time for 12 years, so I’ve seen a lot of trends come & go in that time. I think my editing style is unique without being too “trendy.” Trendy styles are great, but printing photos for wall art is expensive, and you don’t want something that’s going to look dated in 2 years. I aim for an editing style that’s classic but still has a bit of a trendy, editorial look so that my photos look timeless but modern at the same time.

What are some good family photo locations in San Diego?
There are WAY too many to choose from! The normal spots like Balboa Park, Presidio Park, and the various beaches all over the county are always great go-to locations for family photos in San Diego. I also love spots like Liberty Station or even local colleges for the variety they offer.

What are your favorite sessions to do?
I love photographing all families who want to play & have fun, but if I had to pick, I’d have to say families with younger kids. My kids are 2.5 and 4.5, so it’s always fun to photograph families with kids around the same age because my pop-culture references are fresh & usually spot on. I can bust out a pretty good “Let It Go” under pressure.
