Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy David.
Kathy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart, and it was just a matter of time that I would start my own company. I started in banking and worked for a fortune 500 financial institution for nine years. During the last year of my career as a banker, I knew I had to leave. I was waiting for the right moment to do it, and one day, I just did it. At that time, I didn’t know what kind of business I would start, but it didn’t matter. I decided I would just figure it out later.
Over a casual conversation with my husband, who at that time, was an IT manager for a biotech company in San Diego, we decided to bring our talents together, and offer enterprise-level IT services to small businesses in Southern CA. I took a leap of faith with my husband and started IT TechPros, Inc. in January of 2006. I started the company while my husband still worked a full-time job, and within a month of starting, we already secured our first contract, and within less than a year, my husband was able to quit his job to join me in the business.
We have been looking forward ever since, and we have garnered multiple awards over the years of being in business. Most importantly, we love working with our team members, we love our clients, and we love making a difference in our community.
Has it been a smooth road?
If it were easy, everyone would be a business owner! Unfortunately, the harsh reality of all realities about business ownership is that having a business is one of the hardest ventures anyone can undertake! You do have to have tough guts, unwavering resilience, massive drive, and relentlessness to succeed in business!
While it is one of the most challenging things a person can do, business ownership also gives you the highest level of gratification knowing you have started something on your own that you love and enjoy. The real joy also comes from seeing it grow, succeed and thrive!
As a business owner and leader of your company, you have to maintain an open and flexible mindset. You have to flex with the different stages and unexpected situations that will come up in life. You have to be tough with your business dealings when it comes to the business’ financial stability of your firm, and you have to be resolute but caring when it comes to your team.
You have to work hard and put in the time in your company, but also work as hard to have the discipline to prioritize time for yourself, family, and fun. As a business owner, it is a never-ending journey of learning and development, and education is key to elevating yourself to the next level.
Business ownership is challenging, but it is also fun exhilarating: it is a maze that entrepreneurs navigate and take on to conquer! All of these harsh realities are what makes it all worthwhile for the ones who are brave enough to ride the adventure we call business!
For the people who ride it out and makes it through to the top, it is the greatest feeling in the world! This is what small business ownership is about!
We’d love to hear more about your business.

In 2013, my company, IT TechPros was named 2013 Supplier of the Year Class I by the Women’s Business Enterprise Council-West (WBEC-West), as well as 2013 Minority-Owned Business of the Year, awarded by the San Diego District of the Small Business Administration. In 2014, I received special recognition by the State of California Senate, District 39, and the North County San Diego Business Development Center, for my work in creating economic impact and inspiring potential entrepreneurs in the business community. In 2015, IT TechPros was recognized as one of the Top 100 Managed Services Provider – Small Business Edition List by Penton Technology, and in 2017, I was selected as one of the Top WBE CEOs and published in WEUSA Magazine.
These awards may not be of great value to our customers, because at the end of the day, what matters is that we are doing the jobs that we were hired to do. That is what is most important for us too! But, these awards do validate what we strive to do as a professional Information Technology firm. It is excellent to get the recognition by the prestigious organization who have awarded and honored me and my firm, IT TechPros, for the work that we do.
What makes us different than other service providers? It comes down to the value we bring to our customers. There is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes down to our client’s business operations. We listen to our customers need and put a strategy in place to help overcome their specific information technology problems. We are also agile, and we can move and make changes a lot quicker than larger I.T. firms. We take a creative approach to some of the most complex I.T. related problems and have been successful in all of our implementations since we started.
Speaking of larger I.T. firms, we are sub-contractors to larger I.T. firms who have specialized needs, and we help our I.T. partners meet and exceed their customer’s expectations. We are a high-touch, and customer oriented I.T. firm. We speak in a language that our customers can understand, and do not use “non-essential” or “techno mumbo jumbo” words to make us appear smarter. Our customers know what they are going to get when they work with us. No confusions, just straight to the point services, and solutions that give our customers the peace of mind when working with us.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe starting a business anywhere in San Diego County is a great opportunity. San Diego is a great place for entrepreneurs. There are rich resources available to entrepreneurs regardless of the industry. So I say, “Heck Ya! Do it!”
