Meet Kathy Hansen, Barbara Jeanine and Crystal Jones of Industrial Grind Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Hansen, Barbara Jeanine and Crystal Jones.

Barb and Kathy started the company in 2011 after retiring from the Navy for 20 years and 30 years, respectively. Not long after the first shop opened, they realized they needed to make smarter spending choices so they started roasting their own coffee and making their own gluten free pastries as well. You can now find some of their pastries in Whole Foods (La Jolla, Del Mar, Hillcrest). Crystal, Barb and Kathy’s niece, came on board in 2015 to manage the shops and helped take them to the next level. Since then, they have opened two additional shops and closed the original two.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every business has struggles. When we opened our first shop it was a lot of long hours and learning on the fly since we didn’t have experience in coffee. When we opened our second shop (bakery) it was trial and error again to formulate gluten free pastries that customers would love. We found another shop in Tierrasanta which was technically a deli when we purchased it so the change from deli to coffee shop was a big struggle. We found out our landlord had sold the property where our original shop was located so we had to find a new location in Hillcrest. This happened so soon after opening the shop in Tierrasanta that we had a very rough year financially. Employees come and go, trends come and go, the three of us have very different opinions at times but we always come to a solution. The customers deserve our best and that’s what we strive to give them.

Please tell us about Industrial Grind Coffee.
We roast our own coffee, make our own flavors for the drinks and make our own gluten free pastries. We’re probably most proud of all of it. It’s not easy to have a successful small business right now and we are doing our best to change with the times to stay relevant. We strive to have a welcoming space where everyone can feel at ease and free to be themselves. We believe that authenticity is imperative to a great customer experience and we make it a priority to know the people we serve.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Probably a lot of things. We learned a lot the hard way. We probably wouldn’t have purchased our 3rd or 4th locations so soon. It takes a long time for a new space to pay for itself and puts a lot of strain on the other locations. We learned that numbers don’t lie and to watch them like a hawk. If something isn’t working, change it asap.
