Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy OBrien.
Kathy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Dating back to 1933, the marina has enjoyed a long history in the harbor and a reputation as one of the oldest and most established marinas in San Diego.
Following a complete overhaul in 2005, Sun Harbor received recognition on a national as well as international level as the world’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, marina.
Today, the marina remains in good financial health. We attribute the success of our operations to a variety of factors including a proactive stance on environmental issues, dedication to customer services, a strong community connection, and a business model built around multiple revenue streams.
Has it been a smooth road?
With the goal of becoming a LEED facility there were lots of struggles. We were pioneers as a marina developing under the standard. Many building materials were not readily available. Some of the recycling was not properly tracked. At times it was frustrating, though it was a critical mission to re-build with the environment in mind, taking all steps possible to provide a clean working environment from the property to the water that is being used as part of the business. The waterways extend beyond in providing education to boaters about best management practices not only practiced by the marina staff but practices for boaters to engage in.
The financial slump in 2008 hit all properties hard and creative programs had to be developed to insure long term success
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sun Harbor Marina – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are fortunate to be located in a central area of Point Loma giving easy access to tenants for relaxing, recreating, purchasing services and products within an easy walk. We are further distinguished in creating a close community for our tenants. They can relax knowing their property is well looked after by staff and neighbors alike. Customer Service is key to the industry – Boaters have a boat as a recreation – time to relax and get away, not face new problems. Land based tenants enjoy spectacular views from almost every office.
Services on site include:
- OEX Pt Loma for SUP, kayak and bike rentals as well as lessons.
- Benchmark Custom Welding for turnkey welding services on vessels or home improvement.
- BrandSavants for brand marketing to keep businesses running at their peak offering more time for R&R.
- Cabrillo Yacht Sales broker on site offers extensive listings on new and used boats.
- Pizza Nova for a great meal or get together over drinks.
- Royal Polaris offers short and long range fishing trips for those looking for the big catch.
Sun Harbor Marina is a location for tenants and the public to enjoy their free time.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our city has the best weather for getting outdoors. San Diego has also grown tremendously over the last 20 years offering just about every service you could want to enjoy life. The restaurants have developed into notable locations. Transportation is easily accessible with or without a car. Alternate destinations are often hours away to explore (zoo, Seaworld, Julian, Ensenada, Fairgrounds, Wine tasting, Horse races….) There is a major focus on Sustainable living – as well as staying close to home.
Currently, the most difficult challenge is support of the growing homeless community. In many cases, over the last 12 months, homeless individuals have gotten aggressive and done damage to the property as well as cause fear to community members.
