Meet Katie Bray of Financial Vision Bookkeeping in Tacoma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Bray.

Katie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my career in Finance during the Great Recession, fresh out of college with a business degree. I certainly had a knack for numbers and loved the organization and predictability they offered. I deeply enjoyed the travel industry and soaked up so much rich learning while in this role. I left that position eight years later as the Director of Finance. Through that experience, I knew that I could help many entrepreneurs with the skills I had created in finance, HR, administration and leadership.

Transitioning into motherhood and looking to create a work-life balance, I soon realized my next best step was to start my own bookkeeping business and leverage my skills to support dozens of entrepreneurs. At the same time, as a family of four, we decided to move from Southern California to Tacoma, Washington. We were committed to finding a life and community that really fit us as a family of adventurers in the PNW. Moving to Tacoma meant a fresh start for all of us, a new job for my husband at Adobe in tech sales and new schools and friends for my young children. I stepped into a whole new world of entrepreneurship and motherhood that I had never experienced before.

A year after starting my business, I realized that much of what I get to do is work with clients on their money mindset and leveling up in their business. Going all-in on their business and taking themselves and their business more seriously. This is also when I began coaching bookkeepers on how to run a successful bookkeeping business. Bringing the two together felt like a unique and perfect match. I now run both businesses while working a flexible schedule that allows me to spend time with my family and also serve my clients to the greatest level possible.

Financial Vision Bookkeeping is now three years old and has served 100’s of entrepreneurs through monthly bookkeeping, bookkeeping consulting and training, workshops and business coaching. Today, the kind of clients I support are located all over the country, much of the work is 1:1 and we get to create a business that supports their greater goals and ambitions that is deeply grounded in their numbers and their financial plan. Since moving to Tacoma I have got to experience freedom like never before and creating a life I truly love.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business and moving two states away was probably one of my biggest and most challenging adventures of my life so far. Along the way, I would say one of my biggest challenges was learning how to manage my calendar, to make room for myself, my family and my business. Busy is just not something I want to be – I love creating free time in my schedule and time to just be at home alone or with my family- either reading a good book or out hiking mount Rainier, savoring each and every moment.

Professionally I have struggled with the fear of failing and being willing to take big risks. The biggest risk of my business was hiring my own coach and investing a very uncomfortable amount of money in myself. The truth is the gamble was on me- and now I know that is the best risk you take in life. Taking that risk also brought me the biggest gains in my life and business. I have grown my team and my ability to serve on such a greater level than I could before.
