Meet Kellen Dieterich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellen Dieterich.

Hi Kellen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Kellen – a Social Media & Social Advertising Consultant and the owner of Kellen McAvoy, Inc. I help businesses grow fans, traffic, and sales through organic and paid social media strategies. Basically, I show you how to turn clicks and comments into raving, repeat customers!

I started my Social Media career at an internet marketing agency in San Diego creating social media content for a variety of brands, managing influencer marketing campaigns, and executing Facebook and Instagram Ads. In 2015, I was awarded SDX (San Diego Ad Club & Marketing Association) Agency Professional of the Year.

From there, I went in-house to become the Digital Marketing Manager at a technology start-up managing all things digital, including Blogs, Email, Social, Content, Ambassadors, Focus Groups, and so much more. One thing that I missed while working in-house was the opportunity to work with a variety of clients. That’s why four years ago, I started Kellen McAvoy, Inc. so I could help more businesses leverage organic and paid social media strategies to grow online. In the last four years, I’ve helped my clients achieve results like 2X-24X Return on Ad Spend, 958% increase in online sales YOY, 36% Audience Growth to over 200K Fans in one year, and more.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My mantra is “Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable”. I apply this to running, my life, and my business. When starting your own business, you’re bound to run into challenges and make mistakes – I’ve definitely made my fair share. A few struggles I’ve had to overcome include under-scoping projects or asking the right questions when determining whether a client is the right fit and I can truly help them.

When starting out, you might want to work with everyone that comes your way. That might be OK in the beginning so you can figure out who you like working with and what projects you enjoy. But in order to grow and be successful, one thing I’ve learned is that it’s OK (and even encouraged) to say “No”. When working with any new client, I always make sure that I can actually achieve their goals so we can develop a beneficial, long-term partnership.

Can you talk about how you think about risk?
Personally, I’m not a huge risk-taker, but I do think that if you want to be successful in social media, you have to be willing to try new things. When helping my clients, we take calculated risks based on how we think campaigns, content or influencer partners will perform. Part of my job and responsibility to my clients is being informed of the latest social media trends, platform updates, privacy regulations and forecasting what the future of social media + social advertising might look like and communicating that to them.  In my professional opinion, you have to be willing to try out these new features or channels, test, learn, and take these kinds of “strategic” risks.
