Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie Carnohan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Five years ago is when my light went completely out. I don’t think it’s unique to become bored in a mundane job that rarely, if ever, ignites your passions in life–I just knew I had reached my own personal limit. I couldn’t go one more day without a creative outlet, and I knew it. Everything felt like it was slowly dying and falling apart.
I come from a family that bares traditional skills with their hands, thrives in creative projects, and embraces upfront emotions. All of these things helped me discover my love for photography at an age when I was still taking notes in history classes and learning how to drive. I admittedly never thought I could be a wedding photographer. From what I knew, the photographer-client relationship appeared so stale, impersonal, and business transaction-like. A few months after I graduated from college, I was offered my first opportunity to second photograph a wedding with a friend of mine. And just like that–I was in love. I fell in love with their love, with the emotion of the day, with the deeply touching moments I was honored to witness… and this incredible business just blossomed into my life as it had always been there. The entrepreneurial woman’s life has been instinctual to my character and beyond exciting.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pushing out of my comfort zones has been my biggest challenge. Entering into an industry with so much talent (especially right here in Southern CA) was quite intimidating, but more than that was the vulnerability that I have decided to allow in myself as an authenticity-focused photographer. This is my method for creating real, natural connections to my couples and their photos. This means I cannot hide behind a corporate name or a uniform, but that I must be unapologetically and authentically me as the face of my work! However, knowing that my couples will ultimately connect with who I am and my work has also been a great strength for my business.
Please tell us about Kellie Viagem.
I am a wedding photographer who specializes in the most natural approach possible for my work. From every interaction I have with my couples to the style of my portfolio, I always keep true connection and reality in mind. My couples always express their appreciation for how comfortable they feel during our meetings, sessions, and follow-ups.
The “Viagem” in Kellie Viagem is not my last name but actually translates as “travel” in Portuguese. I lived in western Brazil for a period of my life, and that is where I learned best how to create the authentic, human connections that are so valuable in my approach to photography. I wanted to incorporate this very personal detail in this very personal business of mine–with which often comes with opportunities for exploration and travel to destinations.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being the youngest of eight children, I self-assumed the role of entertaining and making my family laugh. I would find little toys with weird imperfections and create “characters” out of them. There were so many goofy little songs I would sing about them and their characteristics–some of which my siblings and I still sing to this day.
