Meet Kelly Abbott of Great Jones Street in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Abbott.

Kelly is the CEO and founder of Great Jones Street (GJS), revolutionizing the publishing industry, giving today’s most talented, prolific, short story authors and readers a community in which to interact through his short fiction app for the mobile lifestyle.

As a writer himself, he has built up GJS as the largest buyer of short fiction annually. The app satiates appetites for bite-sized entertainment (like a prefilled eReader with every genre for fans to read, listen or stream in 5-, 10-, to 15+ minute fiction bursts), beautiful aesthetics, audio from writers and direct interactions with writers. GJS tells the story of the contemporary human experience–from the street to the suburbs, supernatural to sexy– and makes short stories cool again. GJS also enables professional writers to monetize their art.

Kelly himself is a technologist and serial entrepreneur at heart having founded and built several other technology companies (Livefyre, a social depth platform acquired by Adobe). He is a board member of CIE (Community Information Exchange) San Diego, which enables community organizations to share healthcare information with technology for at-risk citizens for higher-quality care; chair of the Board of Directors for Traveling Stories, a 501c3 nonprofit that helps kids fall in love with reading by the fourth grade; a member of Seed San Diego, investing in early-stage companies with disruptive technology.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In a year since the app’s founding, Great Jones Street has become the largest purchaser of short fiction annually, curating thousands of stories in every genre (science fiction, street lit, crime & mystery, erotica, fantasy, and horror) for fans to read, listen or stream. Great Jones Street makes short stories, well, cool again, enabling readers to get the best quality short fiction in one place. We are changing the way writers get paid and readers are entertained overall, satiating appetites for bite-size entertainment, beautiful aesthetics and direct interactions with writers.

Our filter for obtaining the best works is the GJS writers themselves. Authors must be recommended by another writer already featured on GJS to appear on the app. The result: the best quality platform for short fiction – period.

Finally, Great Jones Street makes it easy for publishers and others to extend the legs of their content and touch the hearts and minds of their users through multiple options to syndicate our curated, quality fiction platform. We make collections available to brands and other content providers to offer their readers a richer, more engaging experience.

Recently, Great Jones Street announced an agreement with Medium to make premium short fiction from GJS available daily on its platform, emphasizing the natural marriage between non-fiction and fiction to create a more engaging, sticky user experience. GJS fiction short stories, and a historical fiction serial, are now also featured on Medium’s homepage every weekday.

In starting a brand new platform, our first challenges were growth and awareness. We have thousands of downloads and users and hundreds of authors on the app, promoting their presence on it, and are looking to even further expansion through partnerships.

Please tell us about Great Jones Street.
Great Jones Street is the short fiction app for the mobile lifestyle. The Great Jones Street app curates thousands of stories – like a pre-filled eReader with every genre for fans to read. Offering high quality, bite-sized entertainment in today’s fast-paced world. We curate the best in short fiction for any time readers crave a quick bite of entertainment–on the subway, in line, waiting at the doctor’s office, before bed–on their mobile device.

Studies show people who read fiction are happier, have better relationships, are more empathetic, less anxious, have more to talk about. Life looks better when people take time to escape and read contemporary fiction. It has been an inspiration throughout my life and is a powerful tool for readers and publishers alike to engage on a whole new level. Our goal at Great Jones Street is to continue to promote quality fiction, get more people reading it, and publishers providing access to it.
