Meet Kelly Jett of Kelly Jett Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Jett.

Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started shooting weddings in Virginia after I separated from the Army in 2007. At first, it was difficult for me to find a job, so I began volunteering to shoot weddings as a second photographer and get experience. Somehow, I ended up being the only photographer at all of these weddings, so I was always a little nervous, but the challenge was exciting. The most interesting wedding involved a candelabra that started a small fire on one of the tables, and when no one else would put it out, I dashed from across the room to throw someone’s drink on it.

Occasionally late into the evening, the other vendors and I will be the only sober ones at the wedding, which is totally fine. However, I don’t want to embarrass anyone who may be having a good time and forget the camera is there. This is why I always deliver my wedding galleries with a private password for the clients!

In 2009, after realizing how much I loved being a photographer, I pursued an advanced arts degree to hone my skills. Five years ago I completed a Master of Arts Degree in Photography with Savannah College of Art & Design, and three years ago, I relocated to beautiful San Diego with my husband, who is in the Navy. I now have over ten years of experience shooting weddings and engagement sessions, but it is always fresh and exciting for me each and every time. I love seeing how happy the couples are to be marrying each other, and all the work that has gone into their big day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my challenges was relocating my business to San Diego, (and having no photos in my portfolio of sunset on the beach!) but once I was established here, it’s been so wonderful. I love how many couples can have outdoor weddings here, and not have to worry (as much) about bad weather.

Honestly for an artist, the biggest challenge sometimes is yourself, your inner critic. After obsessing with someone’s wedding gallery for 2 weeks, and painstakingly editing each photo, I still hold my breath when I click “send” on the email to the client. My whole day/week is made when I get that reply from them about how much they love the images.

My advice to other wedding photographers (especially when encountering this!) is to find a consistent style that You love and perfect it. Your clients will be So happy that their wedding gallery is similar in style to the portfolio photos they fell in love with when they hired you.

Kelly Jett Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I collaborate with couples and families to create candid-style images that are deeply personal and emotionally moving. I produce the final images as artwork, in a classic, film-like style.

I specialize in Wedding Photography, Engagement Sessions, Family Portrait Sessions and Fine Art Albums.

I am most known for my breathtaking beach weddings and portrait sessions, my custom-edited black and white film-look photographs, and my customer service.

I am extremely proud of my prior military service, which are the origins of my passion for photography. I picked up the shutter bug while I was doing surveillance photography with the Army. Having served overseas, and been in situations where there wasn’t always freedom or time for art, I feel so grateful for this life and my artwork. So when it is someone’s day with me, I have planned their session in and out, obsessed over the details, and made you and your loved ones the most important part of my day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment of my photography career was when the celebrity-level Las Vegas photographer that I hired for my wedding two years ago told me that she loved my work, and started following my Instagram page!
