Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Schott.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I purchased a starter kit of essential oils from my girlfriend, basically to confirm my suspicions that she had gone cuckoo and that I was providing my babies the best care possible with the selection of products available at Target. Umm, wrong. I was wrong and it was only two days after receiving my oils that I would have the opportunity to put them to the test. My first experience with essential oils consisted of nausea, peppermint essential oil, and my two-year-old. Let’s just say, it left my husband and I scratching our heads thinking, “Did that just work?”
Well, listen, that one success with oils wasn’t enough to convince my husband and I. Over the next six months, we used that starter kit of oils for everything from sleep and tummy issues to skin irritations, emotions, hygiene, house cleaning and air purifying. Within those six months, everyone in my family from my newborn to my husband had experienced the magic of oils. At this point, my husband and I agreed that the oils worked and we were gonna stop referring to them as snake oils and stop trying to disprove their efficacy.
What I realized is that for every oil I used, there was a synthetic or chemical-based product I was no longer using. That felt good. I mean, this was really empowering. I, all of a sudden, had an extremely versatile set of tools that was safe and natural, and an instant community of like-minded mothers that I could access virtually and get answers to any of my oily questions.
But wait, how come I had never heard of essential oils? There was a way I could support my family’s wellness, reduce their exposure to synthetics and chemicals, and it was safe and sustainable to the environment and nobody was talking about it? Say, what?!
This is where The Oil Dispensary was born, along with my passion to educate moms on the hidden toxins we are bringing into our home. I learned a ton after researching how and why essential oils work. In doing so, I also learned what is in the conventional products sold at our local convenience stores. Ingredients hidden in the fine print, like hormone disruptors, skin irritants, and carcinogens. Chemicals that are linked to infertility, asthma, behavioral and developmental issues and are dangers that no mother would knowingly choose to bring into the home.
My goal is to make the process of living a cleaner lifestyle hassle-free, budget-friendly, and full of support from a community of mothers who are demanding a better life for their children.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, I was floored. I was sharing what I was doing, the variety of issues I was helping my family with, and the convenience and ease of having a collection of essential oils in my home. Friends wanted the same thing for their families and my business was born. Creating an accidental business was exciting. I was having a positive impact on my community and making an income. This was definitely something that I wanted to pursue as a stay at home mom.
What I didn’t understand is the difficulty of working alongside my children. My co-workers are five and seven years old and they won’t leave me alone. Ha! It is hard to complete a task without being interrupted and a lot of my client communication happens through text while waiting in the pickup line at school.
With selling a product and service, there is also the struggle of educating my audience. It was never my intention to have to persuade someone to use essential oils or plant-based products. I simply wanted to educate and help those who were, like me, looking for a better lifestyle but felt overwhelmed by the process. These days, I feel that moms are holding back with the misconception that they have to buy a ton of oils or try to sell something. I spend a lot of time correcting the misinformation or expectations set by other businesses similar to mine.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Oil Dispensary – what should we know?
I help create strong and empowered parents that, in turn, create strong and empowered homes. Our children are more sick than ever and we need to make changes in the home in order to model good environmental health. I introduce parents to a healthy option and a community of families that are working towards the same goal. Mothers no longer feel lost or confused about what to do or how to care for their family’s daily annoyances. The result is that we are leading a new generation that knows how to listen to their body’s needs, they have the tools to address their symptoms safely and naturally, and they work proactively to support their health and happiness.
I typically work one-on-one to understand a family’s personal needs, but I love to educate small groups in a workshop type atmosphere. Together, my clients and I come up with a strategic plan to ditch the toxins and switch to something more natural and sustainable, all while respecting their budget and family wellness goals.
I sell Young Living essential oils and plant-based products and am known for ditching hundreds of synthetic and chemical ingredients in my own home using this brand. There are enough dangers and chemicals in our environment, I am certainly not going to pay money to bring them into my home. I am most proud when I get those “thank you” messages form mothers because I was able to help them find a solution or care for their children using essential oils.
My business is different because we create relationships that last forever. You are welcomed into a community of people who are always available to help. As our families grow, we are constantly faced with new challenges. With classes, workshops and virtual community groups, our members have access to information and testimonies that will help them support their family’s through the ups and downs of life.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I work mostly with moms. They don’t have time for BS and they don’t have money to waste. I think my audience respects me for my honesty and integrity. I give away a ton of information and advice for free because I truly want to change the way our children are raised. I hate that personal care companies don’t care about the safety of their products and how it affects the growth and development of our children.
I stumbled onto essential oils because a friend showed me how to use them. They have drastically changed my confidence as a mother and have set my family on a whole new health trajectory. I want to share that with anyone who has the same goals for their family.
