Meet Kelly Soto of Kellyta Soto Art and Photography in Point Loma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Soto.

Kelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m originally from Colombia, and 7 years ago I came to the United States. I had studied marketing and I’ve always had an enormous interest in business, which is why I decided that the best course for my life would be to start my own brand. This was important to me because I love being my own boss and because I had married a Marine and needed the flexibility to be able to work if and when the military decided to move us. I’ve I always been interested in photography and art, and after becoming a mother I decided that dedicating myself to this profession would be something that would allow me to express myself artistically while also giving me the opportunity to spend time with my daughters and watch them grow up. I also wanted my efforts to matter, and I think that through photography I am able to not just take a picture but capture a moment and preserve it for the family that hires me that they’ll be able to look back at and remember that important time in their lives. Right now, Kellyta Soto Photography is small, but that is okay because its mine and I know that its growth and evolution will directly reflect the amount of love and effort that I put into it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like I’m just starting down this road and I’m still not 100% sure where it will lead me, but I’ve enjoyed the journey and know that there is still a lot for me to do and a lot for me to learn. Being a mom, a wife, and running your own business takes a lot of time and effort, and I wish there were more hours in the day for me to do the things I know need to get done.

Getting this business where I’d like it to be is definitely a marathon and not a race; I just have to be patient and try to do a little more every day.

Please tell us about Kellyta Soto Art and Photography.
I specialize in maternity and newborn sessions, and also enjoy capturing baby’s first year and family portraits. I also do engagement photos, and would like to branch out into other areas outside of strictly portrait work. I am most proud of the fact that I came to this country as an immigrant who spoke very little English, but despite all the challenges I’ve faced as a newcomer I’ve been able to take a dream and turn it into a reality through persistence and handwork (and a little bit of stubbornness). I think my creativity and vision combined with my work ethic and desire to not just make happy customers but repeat customers are what makes me unique.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I enjoyed training in roller-sports. Think figure-skating but on roller-skates.
