Meet Ken Hoelscher of Socal Vows in San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Hoelscher.

Ken, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Socal Vows really started as a business back in 2009 when I was asked to cover six weddings for one of the pastors on my staff. Being the lead pastor for Carmel Mountain Church and a pastor since 1990, I had performed many weddings over the years. I did those six weddings to cover for my colleague and it was a blast. What I didn’t know was that the weddings were booked at a wedding venue called Wedgewood, and they were getting ready to expand into many locations. They loved how I did these six weddings and they asked if I would be willing to do more weddings that were booked at more of their Wedgewood locations. That is how it all started.

Today, Socal Vows performs over 150 weddings a year all over San Diego County, Orange County, and Riverside County for a variety of different backgrounds. We do non-traditional ceremonies as well as standard ceremonies.

Small intimate beach ceremonies to large ceremonies at some of the biggest and best venues in southern California.

We offer four main packages: 1) Standard Ceremony, 2) Intimate Ceremony, 3) Renewal of Vows Ceremony, and 4) Pre-marital counseling. Recently, we were awarded one of the Top 20 officiants of southern California by Expertise.com

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think it is ever smooth. In the beginning it was more of a part time kind of thing, but each year it grew more and more. It has been more of a full time occupation over the last two years so it has been more challenging.

I really believe in marketing and so we put a lot of effort and resources into our marketing. We have a great product and the reviews back that up, so getting it out there in front of people is the biggest thing we can do right now.

Socal Vows – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in taking away the stress of the wedding ceremony. We are in constant contact with the couple making sure that everything is taken care of for them. On the day of the ceremony we make it a point to meet with each person and reassure them that everything is fine and it is going to be great.

When it comes to the ceremony, we are really good and making the ceremony fun and casual, yet intimate and sincere. Couples tell us all the time how much they enjoyed the ceremony. They did not feel nervous and they liked the way we use humor to break up the tension and help the guests feel comfortable too. Most of all, couples like the way we make their ceremony very personal. We take their story in weave it throughout the ceremony to make it very special for them. The result is that couples and their guests enjoy the ceremony and remember it, instead of waiting for it to be over so that they can go party.

I am most proud of our reviews; we have over 200 5-Star reviews… and it seems to be growing everyday!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being recognized as one of the Top 20 officiants out of 450+ that were personally reviewed. I also love when a couple is really happy with their ceremony. When that bride says, “I have been dreaming about this kind of ceremony for years, and you did it!” That is awesome as well.
