Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Kuhlken.
Ken , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About a dozen years ago, several partners and I set out to found an online college. We applied for California licensing and then for accreditation to offer degrees in Counseling and Creative Writing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a non-profit, we depended upon donations to keep the tuition at a minimum. But the recession took its toll on our donors, and when it came time to renew our accreditation status, we couldn’t afford to do so. Since then, we are trying to rebuild while still keeping the tuition to a minimum.
Perelandra College – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We offer certificates and single classes in Creative Writing, and are dedicated to providing the best education for the lowest tuition. Our Writing and the Spirit certificate programs (at http://perelandra.edu/what/spirit/) are the only ones of their kind. The purpose is not only to teach writing skills, but also to show writers how and where to find inspiration.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Writing novels is hard. Many people believe they can create a readable novel, but when they begin to actually write, they learn it’s a daunting challenge. My most gratifying moments are when one of our students completes a book length project of which they can be forever proud.
