Meet Kent Oberlin of Grace Home Systems

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kent Oberlin.

Kent, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been involved in audio + video throughout my professional career in different forms. I started out as a recording engineer at POP Sound in Santa Monica where I mixed sound for TV and radio commercial broadcast.

Following that, I was a sound engineer at Sony Pictures in Los Angeles in their post-production sound department where I was responsible for overseeing all the technology used to produce the soundtracks for the Hollywood films the studio would produce. I also assisted in the design and implementation of the “dub” stages located on the movie lot which essentially are glorified commercial movie theaters on steroids, like Cinepolis times 5! These dub stages had all the technology needed to deliver the blockbuster film soundtracks you ultimately hear when visiting your local cineplex to checkout out the latest flick.

Eventually, I started my own post-production studio here in San Diego where I offered sound and picture editorial services for the local commercial and independent film scene. I also offered studio design for other post-production houses in the area who wanted rooms where they too could produce content suitable for the commercial world.

It was through my studio business I met clients who not only needed my editorial services but would have personal projects of their own, constructing a new home or business for example and wanted advice on how to take the technology in their project to the next level. From this birthed Grace Home Systems, a company where I could employ skills from each of my prior trades, offering the swiss army knife of residential and commercial technology solutions!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As luck would have it I started Grace Home Systems in 2006, a few years before the economy collapsed. We fared through those rough times by expanding our offerings and became hyper-focused on the customer experience and customer service to set ourselves apart from all the other struggling and extremely competitive AV companies also trying to keep their doors open. This effort paid off in spades as not only did we make it through to the other side, we were among the few AV companies still standing. The rest is history, we are thriving and much more prepared should we encounter another period of economic uncertainty with a broad customer base and solid reputation.

Please tell us about Grace Home Systems.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Wow, there are so many! My dad was always tinkering with the latest technology, like the Atari 2600 or the first VCR, basking in the classical music coming from his Bose 901 speakers, or working out in the garage on his latest carpentry project.

While he toiled away as a computer engineer in a San Francisco high rise supporting IBM’s global headquarters IT department I think he secretly wished he was covered in sawdust mitering the sides of a built-in cabinet for our family room TV system. He was a creative guy and not afraid to take chances, I miss him dearly. I think he would be proud of the company I have built… and probably would take advantage of having a son available to guide him through the chaos and ever-changing field of home technology.
