Meet Kim Granche and Lore Killermann of Camp Run-a-Mutt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Granch and Lore Killermann.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our friendship began several years ago, when we were both bartending together. Years passed, occupations changed, but our friendship remained. We found ourselves walking down similar paths- working professional lives, but feeling unfulfilled. Our mutual passion for dogs and strong belief in entrepreneurship fueled our fire to pursue a career change.

Discovering the Camp Run-a-Mutt franchise became the perfect fit for us. The philosophy behind a cage-free doggie daycare and boarding facility drew us in, and we found a perfect setting right here in Point Loma. Our genuine love for the dogs at Camp has only made it more clear that we made the right decision. Four years later, we still get excited every time a new puppy comes through the door.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Originally, we had planned on opening our location in North County. We had a lot of challenges finding a location and getting permits. We actually signed a lease, but the location fell through and we had to walk away from it. Ultimately, it worked out exactly as it should have. Our current location in Point Loma became available for purchase (was previously owned by someone else), and we quickly jumped at the opportunity. The rest of the journey has been pretty smooth, but then again, we work with dogs, so it can be slobbery too.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Camp Run-a-Mutt is a cage-free doggie daycare and boarding facility. Our outdoor play yard has two splash pools, artificial turf to run around on, lots of sails to provide shade misters to cool off the pups on hot days, dog houses to nap in, and lots of staff to play with. We even have live Muttcams for our customers to watch their dogs play while they are here.

Our customers can book full-service grooming, purchase a bag of dog food in our retail shop, sign up for obedience classes, and even drop in for monthly low-cost vaccine clinics. We work hard to provide a one-stop-shop for all of our pet loving parents. One of the things that really sets us apart is our boarding service. Pups who come to our sleepovers get to play all day, and when it’s time to go to bed, they all sleep together as a pack, with our staff sleeping right next to them.

How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc?
Occasionally, we have a new camper who is very nervous and unsure about daycare. It’s incredibly rewarding when we earn their trust, and very soon, we see them pulling their owner in, and pushing the door open. They are so excited to come to camp, and it really is amazing. We also participate in many local rescue events. We’ve partnered with Second Chance Dog Rescue for many of these events, and actually had 8 dogs adopted in one morning. Getting to know each of our campers individually, cultivating relationships with them as well as their families, and giving back to the community that has shown us so much love has made us very proud. We are so grateful we’ve had this opportunity.

  • Boarding rates are $65/night for non-holidays, $75/night for holidays.
